Tinting it up...

Tried a search but my phones been puking garbage each time I do....

Looking to tint the motor. Liftback Avensis and I keep a lot of sports gear in her and ocassionaly kip in her too so a tint would help keep prying eyes out. Looking at shades.ie they are quoting 160 for the lot. Basically two questions. Would a total black out on the rear and a legal black out on the front two look alright on a black car and secondly, has anybody used shades.ie for this purpose?

A lad I know has a black Mazda6 tinted like that, looks ok in fairness although I think differing tint levels looks a tad sh1t by default.

Yeah, I'm a bit dubious for that reason....

    I used Shades.ie last year
At the time there is no tint available that will pass the NCT. This might have changed
I went for 20% VLT in the rear. Its dark enough but not limo black, which IMO would look crap
20% is very dark and sufficient for my needs

They are very professional and did a great job

Sorry didnt want to start another thread.

I have my car booked in for tinting with visiontint on Friday, I was planning on getting the front and rear tinted, was thinking 50% to 40% on the back then on the front the 75% nct legal limit but from talking to your man in vision today he said doing the front at legal limit wouldnt even be noticeable is this true?

He was saying to me to come back after the nct which is booked in for 7th of March and then go whatever level I want but Im not doing that I can just picture having to pull the tints off on the side of the road after being stopped by the Gards.

The NCT isn't a one off test either :)

I thought no tint on the front was road legal?

Spoke to Solarcare. He said its pointless tinting the front as its barely noticeable if at all so yeah you're guy is right.

Front tints are legal.... they just have to be VERY light.

Ah right thanks, well thats thrown a spanner in the works not to sure if tints on the back alone will suit my car its not a coupe.

The max legal tint is 35% but people don't realise that most modern cars have at least a 20% tint from the factory.

Nor is mine. I'm still considering it tbh. The two leaning points for me are the car is black and I kind of need the tint. I could have a few grand of gear in the back at times and the less obvious the better.

Cheers for the heads up on Solarcare ND btw. He's a sound fella. :)

Do the NCT centres even have testing gear for tints? THE DOE centre I went to didn't so I bulled at them, told them I knew for a fact (FACT!) that it was below the legal limit and it was up to them to prove otherwise. They then coyly suggested that if I was able to provide evidence for said claim, that would resolve the problem. One crumpled, hairy, soiled, aged and indistinct piece of paper later, I have my cert.

The one in Youghal didn't at the time, cos the DOE lads couldn't borrow one from there. It was a little while back though.

car wentt through the nct with rear tints yesterday and nothing was said, it went through 2 years ago and we were made remove the front tint from the windows as it was not legal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

They don't care what tint you have on the rear, it's the front ones that matter

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 16,659 ✭✭✭✭dahamsta

Nothing would be said, tints in the rear aren't covered by the NCT.

As said above, the rear windows are not a test item. You can paint them black if you like.

Particularly recommended if your kids are uggos.

was gonna get my car tinted but i really dont like the look of the darker back windows and the lighter front windows. I think it looks crap. Might just get the cheap window tint on ebay and rip it off each time i need to do an nct

You'll need the patience of a saint. Applying tint is a horrible job.

    Ha ha.

I remember a thread got locked a while ago on this subject. A guy was asking about it to keep his kids protected from the sun. A bunch of crazies took over asking were his kid going to melt and all sorts of silly things and it descended into absolute stupidness.

I have an estate and the rear is tinted, purely due to having a kid and dog back there. No, they're not allergic to the sun, nor will they melt, but neither do any of them have the ability to shade themselves from the sun, dogs are stupid like that, and a baby in a car seat can't do very much to move themselves out of the way, or adjust non-existing sun shades coming from the roof.

I tried the standard stick on ones but as the rear windows are long and narrow none would fit properly or you'd need a couple, so tints were the way to go.

OP, I got mine done by Shades, did a good job.

There is definityl no darkish tint that you can do all your windows in (including fronts) and still pass the NCT?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,833 ✭✭✭✭ThisRegard

If you did get your front windows tinted and people can't see you, you'll find you probably never get let out at junctions etc anymore.

    Nope

It does look a bit weird having different colour tints front and back

But friend of mine has a black BMW and he got all his windows done in the darkest tint and is just taking the front of for NCT and then getting the fronts done again its only gonna cost €50 for the new fronts to be applied again.

With Dark tints it does get difficult at night when reversing.

Off topic abit what is the story with tints for the DOE does anyone know, I have mine done and it has never failed on them so I'm assuming they never check

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 665 ✭✭✭johnwest288

Anyone know what the darkest legal tint is? Its probably not worth tinting with it anyhoo as its probably not dark lol

That's what I had up until a few weeks ago when I failed my NCT. It allows 35% of the light in, NCT requires 65% of the light. You've got it back to front.

Nope. I drove cars with tints for years, up until very recently, and it's rarely a problem; in fact sometimes it can be easier to get out, for the unfortunate reason that people don't know which way you're looking and err on the side of caution. I usually (used to) open that window thing that most cars seem to have as a courtesy though.

I have to wonder if anyone actually reads beyond the first post of a thread before commenting any more. I covered this earlier.

Your hardly allowed tint the windscreen?

Its generally accepted that you never tint the windscreen, however the regulations don't differentiate between the windscreen and the front side windows so, technically, you could tint it once it still allows 65% of light through.

Ok So if NCT requires you need 65% of light through then if I got 35% tint all round that would be ok?

Just read some other posts i have some factory tint allready so its a no go. My rear windows are tiny so would be pointless bugger it anyway! That solar plexis post above looks interesting removable tint panles i shall check it outs:d

Actually this is something I've been meaning to post about myself..

My (black) Passat has what was the minimum level of tint applied (back in 2008 so I'm assuming 35%?) as done by a crowd out the south side of Dublin who I honestly couldn't recommend to anyone after my experience (even though they came highly recommended here..) - but anyway...

It's NCT time.. will it pass with this or will I have to take the fronts off until it's done? Like someone else above I think differing tints look silly so if I have to get it "adjusted" it'll have to be done all-round to satisfy my OCD :p

Anyone have any feedback about Shades.ie as mentioned above in Blanch? I see they do an "NCT package" to remove/reapply existing tints too...
