Police certificate, any Guards here who would like to help?

    Hello folks,

A few questions about obtaining a police certificate. My brother requires one of these as we plan on going to Australia on a working holiday visa but he has a few convictions. The visa website tells us he will need to provide one with the dates, offences, convictions and penalties.
We went down to the local station with a request form filled out but the Guard tore it up because its for a working holiday visa. He told us if its for a normal holiday visa well then there is no problem 'we can do it here' but the fact its for a working holiday visa you have to go to the vetting unit and obtain one there. He said it will take two months:rolleyes:

Is two months taking the piss? Does this Guard know what he's taking about or is he wrong altogether? He(my brother) only wants a police certificate he is not asking for details of every Tom, dick or Harry.

Will the police certificate show the dates, offences and penalties? Because he needs them on it, thats important. This visa has to be 100%.

    Thanks in advance.

I recently got a garda cert from a station for my canadian immigration and it was accepted by the embassy in London. I would assume it should work for Australia too?

I think the vetting unit only deals with police vetting forms or data protection disclosure like when you want to see what information is held on you. For police certs you apply to the Superintendent for the district your in. This can be found here:

    http://www.garda.ie/Stations/Default.aspx

Just send a letter requesting a police cert, what you want it for, your personal details including previous addresses. A copy of id and a stamped addressed envelope and you should have the cert in a week or 2.

that last poster is correct. The superintendents office deals with it.the process was painfully slow but i know that they have modernised it and it is done through e-mail now and is a lot quicker.

Got mine recently for a working visa. All I did was go up to my local station with my passport and told the garda at the desk I needed a police cert for a working visa and he just took down my Name, D.O.B, Address and passport details then photocopied my passport. Received the cert about 5 weeks later.

Op can I ask, how big is your local station?

The reason I ask is, I've found that outside of the district HQs very few members know about these forms because they don't often see them and as such don't know what to do with them.

If your lacal station is a small sub station, then you may need to make a trip to your local district HQ to get it done.

Came today I think, only took a week which was good BUT here's the problem or is it?

It said he was not convicted of any crime/child abuse charges while he resided in Ireland.

But he has been to court a few times and fined(never done jail time) over offences(not child abuse obviously!).
    Whats going on there???
Im not sure if thats a bad thing or a good thing.

They probably left off minor public order and road traffic offences.
