So I've just read the Irish Catholic about all the leaks from the Vatican to the Italian press which insinuates a lot of scandal, Gays, Masonry and even a plot by a Cardinal to Kill His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI within the next 12 months.

The paper says that although it may sound sensationalist it musnt be dismissed as such, and should be further investigated.

Now I for one have to say that I'd beleive that there is no doubt scandal and masonry going on in the Vatican but killing Pope Benedict XVI:eek: Who could do such a thing and think that such an action is of God?

Has anyone here read this or have any more info about it?

Nothing like giving advance notice of a sneak attack! I wouldn't worry too much about it. Judging from recent comments from the holy Father himself he plans to be around for a while

Apparently the cardinal was Ezio Auditore da Firenze, though it looks like the Pope isn't in any immediate danger.

Well the Vatican does have a history of this kind of thing.

Have a read of Gerard Noel "The Renaissance Popes" , the latest allegations are rather tame compared to what they got up to in the past.

Most governments no longer operate under a system similar to the Vatican. When we had kings then political kills were much more common. These days you could shoot Enda but it won't really do a whole lot, far easier just to photoshop a picture of him with a goat in a hotel room.

Most governments dont operate under the euro.
    Most dont have federal democracires
    there are about 40monarchies.
Plato argued that only Kallipolis, an aristocracy led by the unwilling philosopher-kings (the wisest men) is a just form of government
    Democracy itself varies

The Chuech dont consider any particular form of government as better as long as the people adhere to morally good values.

Have a read of Gerard Noel "The Renaissance Popes" , the latest allegations are rather tame compared to what they got up to in the past.

While it is culled from non supported reports and has no references e;g; it has a chapter on the fictitious Pope Joan "Sex lives of the popes, an irreverent expose of the Bishops of Rome from St Peter to the present day" by Cawthorne, Nigel covers a fair deal of the "scandals" . it is twenty years since I read it but I recall a family of worse repuite than the Borgias where a particular woman was the sire to three generations of popes something like five of them -actually it is SEVEN in her family tree and one anti pope Benedict IX. she had a son for Sergius III who became John XI and another for Alberic of spoleto who became father of john XII and Benedict VII making her their grandmother. John XII,s brother Gregory of tusculum in turn sired Benedict VIII and John IX making her their great grandmother and their brother Alberic III of tusculum was a father to antipope Benedict IX

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marozia
"influence of two sister prostitutes, Marozia and Theodora[1] was founded on their wealth and beauty, their political and amorous intrigues: the most strenuous of their lovers were rewarded with the Roman tiara, and their reign may have suggested to darker ages the fable of a female pope. The bastard son, the grandson, the great grandson, and two great great grandsons of Marozia — a rare genealogy — were seated in the Chair of St. Peter." Pope John XIII was her nephew, the offspring of her younger sister Theodora. From this inaccurate description the term "pornocracy" has become associated with the effective rule in Rome of Theodora and her daughter Marozia through male surrogates.

I think she was eventually garrotted in prison. she as in her forties probably still a great beauty and still considered a threat.

    So what?

So most governments no longer face a significant number of threats of political assassinations, since such assassinations would have a much decreased effect in these countries.

What you think that has to do with the euro, Plato or what form of government is the fairest I've no idea. You seem to be having a completely different conversation than the rest of us.

Given the amount of time I spend indoors, I'm a shoe-in for the role of albino assassin :)

I didnt see the link. I see now you were claiming in the past assisination was more common because of unelected monarchs.

The Pope happens to be elected. Now that you have clarified what you mean I still dont see validity the link to claiming the pope is more likely to have someone attempt assassination against the pope.

why is assassination of the pope more likely in your view than assassination of other heads of state?

Murder of leaders of anything is a common device. It is very effective in removing the person, and often the policy. It may be ordered by those opposed to the policy, and if they succeed to the title or another successor who will carry out the new policy, they have won.

Popes or presidents with reforming agendas; popes or presidents with repressive agendas - likely targets.

But character assassination may well do the job better. Especially if it is based on some truth.

Either way, I expect these worldly means to worldly ends to continue to the End. Being democrats and living in democratic countries, we will be shocked when these happen. We think we are separate from History - but we aren't.

    *******************************************************************
Matthew 24:3 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”

4 And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. 6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

How is that connected to my point of clarification question I asked the previous poster?

The Pope is elected for life and can only be removed from his position through death or if he voluntarily decides to retire (or through long complicated and rare Church rules)

Very few heads of state (with any real power, ie not the Queen) are in the position for life. In countries where that is the case assassination are more likely.

This should have been blindingly obvious I would have thought.
