    Hi,
Id really appreciate some help with a tax question- for the past 4 years I have claimed tax relief on medical expenses, rent etc. I registered as self employed in 2011. ( so im now full time employed and part time self employed). As i am only recently registered as self employed, i have not made my first self assesment. I have registered with ROS and tried to claim 2011 relief but a message appeared that as I cannot do this. Im just wondering if anyone has any info that would help? Thanks in advance!:)

If you are self employed for any part of 2011, you must now file a tax return if you wish to claim these reliefs as your return will include all sources of income and reliefs. I assume when you mention ROS above, you are actually referring to PAYE Anytime. You must now use ROS for self assessed people if you want to file online. Otherwise its a paper form 11. See links below.

Thanks Relax Carry On, i was under the impression that i didnt need to file a return until the end of the first year ( i registered in Nov 2011)? But maybe in order to claim relief I will need to do a return first?

That's it. You had two months of being registered as self assessed, so you are self assessed for the tax year 2011 which ended on 31/12/11. If you want to claim the reliefs now, then you need to file the return either online or by paper.
