My first mocks were today and I started thinking if what I get in geography really matters since I'm choosing History in a few months time. Then I though what the Jc actually means, but I couldnt actually think of it, does it determine what class we get into, or whether or not we get a place in physics, or what? can someone explain this please?

The Junior certificate does not hold any bearing over your leaving cert, unless your school has limited places for classes such as Physics, and who will pick the best students.

However the Junior cert does matter when applying for college in England. Because they have a Continuous Assessment system over there, they will judge your application on your Leaving Cert results AND your Junior cert results. I wish I was told this when I sat my Junior cert so I put work in, but now I'm in the position where there's no point in me applying for any course in England, as they wouldn't accept me.

    Good luck

It wont be potentially life changing, but good JC results come in handy for putting on your CV etc. If you are interested in getting into Maths/Science Olympiads, these are based on JC results.
Some UK colleges accept an A in JC science in Leu of a science subject.

Thank you both for answering (should have said so earlier) but I have another question now. If say I will live in the UK in the future and they will look at my JC results, will they only look at the subjects that I actually do for LC? I mean say I do 7 LC subjects (only 6 get chosen obviously) will they only look at those subjects at JC level? What about things like CSPE, does that subject really have an effect? Its just I find it hard to take that subject seriously and I was wondering if it matters at all, and again thanks everyone for the help!

Probably.. If you think about it, what looks more impressive Music and Home-Ec or Physics and Chemistry? Also, They have Citizenship (I think...) for GCSE so yes they probably do... Also, CSPE is a serious subject... It's just some teacher's are a serious joke.. :/

Yeah, so far this year half the time our CSPE teacher is out and the other half we just watch movies and talk about what we WILL do for the project but we haven't even done work on it. The only way of getting marks for it is studying it at home

I got 10 As in the Junior Cert, but still didn't get into what I wanted in the Leaving, despite amount of preparation done.

Be warned that crazy sh*t can go down on days of the exams, regardless how well you know the stuff and the exam format. So, I guess, the JC can prepare you for that much.
It still is true, in the majority of cases, that if you work hard, you'll get what you want, and the JC does teach us this. But don't forget that no matter how much you do, in the minority of cases, still can still turn out badly - but if it does, chin up, it isn't an easy thing to get over. :o

The most beneficial thing about the JC is that it gets you familiar with the format of the LC and the routine.

Are the exams and the results themselves vitally important? Not really..

I think for Maths, Irish and English they are good indicators of the level you should be taking, but I wouldn't be stressing over a subject that you plan on dropping after 3rd year.

This is coming from someone who got 11 As and thought that the Junior Cert was the most important thing in my life in 3rd year. It's only now that I realise I may have taken it a bit too seriously.
