Unpaid Tax Relief at Source - donated to charity?

    Hope someone can shed some light on this one.

    It was mentioned to me that banks often have TRS paid to them from Revenue which they are unable to allocate as the relevant bank a/c is closed for whatever reason. The person telling me this was insistent that banks have the discretion to distribute this money to various charities.

    It's seems pretty unlikely to me to be honest, I don't see that it's the banks money to be distributing in this way, but perhaps someone here could give me better information?
