silent zones in library

how is everyone finding the new silent zones in the library? personally i don;t think they have made any difference. people still come in in groups and talk away. i know that they are supposed to be self policing but i find it hard to ask people to be quiet even though i am often sitting there seething i should just ask them to shut up but usually resort to giving dirty looks or even eventually moving if the talking doesn't stop. fair play to the library for trying, but as there is obviously a demand for quiet places to work in the library can people not respect their fellow students and go somewhere else if they need to talk or am i just being an old grumpy nerd? or could library staff not do more to enforce the silent zones?

I'd be fierce tempted to go and sit in the library solely for the purpose of getting to tell people to shut up. How can you not be willing to seize the opportunity presented to you??

I think they're f*cking stupid tbh. Especially when there is a full on construction site on the other side of the f*cking window making more noise than and AC/DC concert. Laptops on silent? Wtf is that supposed to mean? And the no headphones rule is ridiculous too. The whole point of headphones is that only you can hear the music! I just treat them like any other part of the library. So far nobody has told me to stop listening to music on my headphones... I reckon its such a stupid rule that the library stewards won't bother enforcing it.

As for others talking, that never bothers me since I always listen to music in the library and my headphones cancel out all external noise.

Headphones often let out tinny buzzing sounds which is ridiculously annoying.

Always amazes me that people dont check how loud their earphones are

tbh headphones don't bother me its just the talking. i can't listen to music while i read or study everyone works differently, and the building site noise doesn't bother me either. the silent zones were set up to facilitate requests from people who, like me, need quiet in order to work. i don't think its unreasonable to expect people not to talk in the silent zones of the library. why da fook are they in there if they just want to talk to their friends or go on facebook? i don't get it

I look forward to the day when somebody cracks and drops a book dramatically on the table and shouts 'WILL YOU JUST SHUT THE F*CK UP'.

Surely a library is a silent zone by definition?

I saw the big banner they have in the Assistive Tech, all of the rules seemed like the kind of thing you ought to expect from any library.

Also, the banner said 'YOU ARE NOW ENTERING A SILENT ZONE'. All it's missing is a replica of the Berlin Wall and some East German border guards.

Hate to be one of these people who aren't able to function with background noise.

Pfft, whenever study week rolls around, I find it easier to study in Smokeys than the hellhole the library inevitably devolves to.

Totally, I check my headphone levels all the time when I'm sitting in the library because I know how annoying it is. Although I don't think it is fair to forbid headphones altogether as it says on the signs, as long as you are not being a bollocks and checking your volumes you should be allowed to use them all you like.

    Edit:

Truth. I've decided to say home in Cavan for the week and just do my studying in the library in a nearby town, I believe that would be far more worth while than going back to Galway just to be tortured by knobs in the library who haven't been inside its doors all year.

Well fsck, we've had someone at the gates demanding Deine Papieren for a few years now.
