Hi all, my OH is currently ringing around to get insured on car. He's just starting out so a few places won't insure him, one of the places he rang has told him that they won't insure him on car until he has his licence 6 months and can show them a letter stating that he has applied for test, then and only then will they insure him. Is this right? Is it the norm? Thanks in advance.

Odd that places won't insure him, as opposed to giving a f*** of quote. Try First Ireland.

Thanks for the reply seemed to be just this one company. We rang another and they had no problems said they would insure him no problem!!

I thought that insurers had to give youa quote regardless of your particular situation. As mentioned above I understood that if they really didn't want you they would simply quote something 2-3 times what anyone else was charging. Agree with other post also regarding that particular insurer they also give reductions to pupils of instructors insured through them so may be worth checking with his instructor.

AFAIK they're only obliged to quote in a situation where you are a current policy holder with them and have already bought the car. Each company has their own underwriting criteria etc.

Another one to try OP is Britton. They've come back with some very reasonable quotes a couple of lads starting out that i'd know.

    Best of luck!

Britton Insurance are most likely the cheapest in ireland when it comes to learner drivers. I was 1500 for TPO which i thought was great for first time insurance. Plus i couldnt afford fully comp and my car was pretty beat up anyway so it didnt matter. PLus i couldnt go under my parents so it all fell into place.

Definetly give them a ring will be worth it :D

Be careful with quotes for Aviva. Sometimes they give a low quote for the first six months and then increase is in the second six. If it is for the full year then that is fine.
