Practicalities of a vintage landrover / landcruiser

    Well lads,

I'm currently driving an '06 landcruiser, but due to family circumstances I need to get out of a commercial and into a car for every day use.

I do a lot of deer stalking and need a 4x4 for obvious reasons.

Im considering selling the cruiser, buying a car and having the guts of 5/6k left to buy a vintage 4x4. It will only be used once / twice a week, but some of the drives will be from Kildare to Waterford etc, so a lot of motorway.

What I'm asking is, is it possible to buy a vintage 4x4 that I could rely on to bring me on 150 odd mile round trips without the fear of god being in me every time I pull of the drive that it may not make it?

5/6k budget, what would you buy?

    Cheers.

You'll struggle to buy a vintage Land Criuser, anything pre 82 is going to be very rusty or had an expensive restoration. BJ40s are classy though in a minimalist way!

5-6000 is a fair amount to spend, you'd get a decent classic Range Rover from the UK but it would be V8 petrol. Best bet would be a series 3 Land Rover from the UK that's been restored and a modern diesel put in, see recent posts in the Defender thread.

I can't think of anything else 4x4 that's pre 82 that you'll lay your hands on easily. A classic Jeep like a CJ5 is could be within you budget but will have a big petrol engine.

There are some floating around that claim to be vintage and on ZV plates but be careful, not all are what they seem

How about a series 1 Pajero? Comfortable enough for the road and simple enough to maintain. Hardest part would be getting one in reasonable nick for it's age; maybe some Japanese imports would suit.

    OP, short answer is no.

    OP, did you get one?

Some UK landrover enthusiasts seem to enjoy restoring Land rovers and selling them on. I've seen some beautiful old Defenders on ebay.

I presume you are looking at vintage to save road tax.

Series 1 Pajero was only launched in 1984 so wouldn't qualify for classic tax ;)
