Are bank transfers safe?

If I sell something outside of eBay (blog etc) and I request people to pay by wiring money to my bank (both national and international people), would this be safe?

I'm so tired of worrying over Paypal and having to use registered post, it's so expensive and scares people off, but I don't want to risk selling something and the buyer claim it didn't arrive. If there is no tracking number, the seller doesn't have a lot to fall back on.

I'm looking to sell my gazillions of tons of vintage type clothing via a blog, it seems to becoming a very popular thing, quite many people buy from them and there are no fees. I'm totally fine with there being less quick sales compared to eBay due to less traffic. But again, I'm not happy with having to advertise only sent by registered post, as it may scare people off as it can be quite expensive and if the dress (etc) is already 20-50 euros...

I've heard that most German eBayers use bank transfer. What kind of details do you give out and is it dangerous to do so?

Sorry if this was posted before, I did search but couldn't find anything.

I used adverts.ie all the time and a lot of buyers like to use bank transfer as you can do it in minutes online. I havent had any problems and use it a lot for reciveing payments. The only details you have to give are your name, name of bank, sort code and account number.

To tracable and you can dispute it easily enough.

To OP; once the money is in your bank there are only very few circumstances it would be removed. These would be due to the bank mistake (i.e. they sent you 20 gazillion euro to your account they will remove it) or fraud based (someone hacked someone's else bank account and sent it). Both are very rare compared to the potential Paypal frauds/disputes.

I deal with cheques quite a bit and they're on every single one I've seen.

This could be worse. If some one does set up a direct debit to that account and there is no money you could get hit with an overdraft fee.
