Well a 7 seat MPV beckons, we've fought it long enough. Having looked around the current Renault Grand Scenic (1.5dci Dynamique), while no oil painting ticks most of the boxes.

I know Renault post 2008 are meant to be better on reliability but can anyone/owners share their experiences?

    Anyone?

In the old days the mere mention of the words 'Renault' and 'Scenic' would result in a flurry of colourful responses.

New or used? I know of a few people with Megane IIIs, Fluences and Scenic IIIs with the 1.5 dCi The only problem I know of is a clutch hydraulic one that basically prevented the car from being driven and would likely have been expensive had it not been covered by warranty.

There is a new 1.6 DCi out now/soon which should be significantly better at moving the Scenic than the 1.5. Seems like a very good engine.

If you genuinely need 7 seats, will you need luggage room too?

If the answer is yes, a full size mpv will be needed.

It would be a used 2010, luggage space would seem to be OK in them. I just have no idea how they fare reliability wise.

I looked at one in 2010. The handbrake "lever" that was the size of a window switch (electronic handbrake) put me off, to be honest. Still, that was based on the then perception of Renault (or all French?) reliabilty in the electrics stakes.

    Or add a roof box!

We've the Grand Scenic TomTom Edition 1.5 dCi 110 for the last year after changing from a Zafira 2.0 Dti. All the electronic toys and the engine is far more responsive and economical by a long way. It'll easily do over 1000km per tank of motorway driving. I find the seat adjustment pretty good with the back two folding into the floor and there's also lots of storage compartments under the floor also. Little storage in the back if your using the 7 seats though.

While the back two seats are adequate for small kids as they get bigger it would be a squash no more than with any other mid range MPV though. Also if you want to throw anything large in height in the back you are limited by the height due to the curved back which may look nicer but is not practical. I was caught out with this in Ikea. The Zafira would have managed fine. Besides this all in all we're happy with it so far and find it a comfortable drive.
