Exact same thing happened on our Focus a few years ago. IIRC the broken white "cup" of the rod in your pic attaches to a ball on the latch side. If you reach up from under the car and press the rod tight up against the ball and then turn the rod the bonnet should open. You could hold it in place and turn it yourself or else hold it in place and get a helper to turn the key in the lock.

would it not be difficult to get the black ball to click back into place?
quite a bad design in my op,why couldnt ford leave the tried and tested method alone, the man that thought the bonnet should be opened witha key should be made fix everyone one these that brake

Ford have now reverted to the conventional style bonnet release mechanism on their latest models which says it all really. That key system is a total disaster IMO.

id imagine you have come across this problem before george? is there a way of taking out the grille or an easy solution to this?

As Brian posted above you can usually get at the mechanism from underneath the car to operate it by hand and get the bonnet open.

Once you get the bonnet open replace the plastic rod. It only comes as part of a complete set including the lock barrel from Ford but you don't need to change the barrel, just the plastic part. I think it is something like €35-40 for the parts.

is it not rather difficult to get the black ball part into the latching mechanism is what i would be thinking? ill give it a go tomorrow and see how it goes

Can't be that hard to master a bonnet release system surely.
