Thinking of buying a vw passat 08 diesel with 88k on it. Any one have any experience of these cars? Have heard they use a lot of oil.

Ive not seen one burn anymore than that tbh without having silly miles on the clock.

Thats 1L per 10,000 km which I would consider about normal.

It is laughable that car manufacturers try to say that 1L per 1000 km is normal though - 10 times the typical oil burn rate.

The only thing I found odd was the older 1.9 in the B5.5 Passat didnt burn anything. The 2.0 dont burn a drop either.

Thanks for yer replies guys. The oil consumption doesn't seem too bad so. The only thing really holdin me back is that my girlfriend has heard of 2 people whose engines went in 08 passats. didn't get any reason why and I know it's a vague problem but it's still putting me off!!!

The 1.9 TDi engine range are very well built units, and provided they've had their oil changed every 10,000 miles or so using the correct oil, you shouldn't have any issues. Its when they havent been mantained that you can have oil consumption probs, i.e. worn turbo oil seals. Usually accompanied by white smokiness from exhaust. Again any sort of service history is an indicator of how well its been maintained. Stay clear of the 1.8s, serious oil burners

Ok thanks. There is 88000kms on the car too and the timing belt has never been changed so I'm sure that will be needed soon too. Not cheap either I understand

I'd wager they were the last of the 2.0 TDI PD engines which are prone to injector failures - something corrected with the move to Common Rail (CR) engines from 2008 on.

Still not a major concern though as VW Ireland have (finally) followed VW UK's lead in initiating a recall of the affected cars so anyone who might have been affected can get them changed under this scheme. It would be worth checking out if this has been done (or due) if you were looking at one though.

Depends on what you think is expensive for a timing belt change. On a VAG 1.9tdi you'd be looking at nor more then €350 for a full kit with water pump in a decent independent garage.

whatever car you buying (exept brand new car), have to keep in mind, that timing belt change have to be done (maybe not if there is dealers note in service book, and you are able check it out) regardless what seller say, they will say you anything to get rid of car.
If you are planing keep car, do full service - oils, filters , timing belt kits, other belts with bearings or whatever goes with them regardless of condition and diagnostics. ... preferably in independent with good reputation garage, who specialize in particular cars. I presume full service , what i mentioned would be good 400 -500 euro, but it worth it. Peace in mind and no hassle.

My brother has a 08 1.9 diesel and he loves it. No irregular oil usage but he does keep serviced on a regular basis but def check out that timing belt.
