Im just wondering... started a new job recently, gave P45 and everything...but i seem to be taxed a hell lot... basically, almost a third of the gross salary is taxed. is it supposed to be that much?

It really depends on what you are earning. There should be a tax code on your payslip. If its E, then that's emergency tax. W is week one and N is normal. Did you receive a tax credit cert from Revenue since you started as this would indicate that your new job has been registered for tax purposes.
