    Hi,

I have a 12 hour layover in Kuala Lumpar airport.

Can I leave the airport and return (obviously I'll have to go through immigration)?

How long would it take to get to the city from the airport?

    Thanks for any help

    Karl

Going to Kuala Lumpur myself for the first time next month, you can take the train into the City centre and it is supposed to take around half an hour to KL Sentral and costs in the region of €8 one way, the Airport is around 30 miles from the city centre and taxis would be slower although possibly cheaper so when you have only 12 hours then the train is a no brainer.

If you hold an Irish Passport then yes you can also enter Malaysia Visa Free for up to 90 days so 12 hours should be no problem.

Just back from KL today. Airport is quite far out of city. I got a taxi in and out to airport. Cost about 100RM (€25) and takes about 40 minutes. You should probably go to see the Petronas Towers and the shopping centre that sits below it. Lots of your big name shops and normal ones. Think Dundrum and BT rolled into one.

If I were you, I would stay at the airport. I had 4 days in KL and probably could have done it in one day. The choice of food is the best thing about the city. You can get a bit of that at the airport!

Just to note, there's 2 airports in KL, do you know which one your flying to? I was flying Air Asia and the airport they use was a good distance away, I think and hour and half from the city

yeah the LCCT Low Cost Carrier Terminal is a way away from the city. The main airport is a way away as well, but is on a train line from KL Sentral.

The LCCT is a train ride and a bus ride from KL Sentral.

The LCCT and the main airport share the same runway/s afaik and are different buildings around the same airport structure.

Don't see any reason why you couldn't go and check out KL OP. EU citizens don't need a visa in advance to enter the country and there is no charge for the passport stamp you get on arrival.

That being said there ain't much about KL In general.

Just about all that's to see is the Twin Towers aka Petronas Towers. KL itself ain't particularly pretty, interesting or engaging.

I found the city to be downright ugly.

Hi, im flying with Malaysia arlines to KUL (the international airport).

The airport site reckons 30 mins to KL Sentral. But the towers seem quite a bit away from here.

Am i better off just getting taxi direct from the airport?

    Thanks

The train will be faster than a taxi in normal traffic.

A lot depends on what time of day you're in KL. At night there are lots of dining options. During the day it's shopping (big malls or more traditional markets) or architecture and more food. The idea that KL is ugly is faintly ludicrous. There are a lot of old colonial buildings and some of the best Islamic architecture in the world.

Basically, don't try to do too much and eat lots. If I had 7/8 hours to kill I'd head for Chinatown and take it from there.

Yes I believe they also have an old moorish style Railway station that I intend to visit, but I have 5 days to take in KL before heading over to Borneo and Brunei.
