I'm upgrading from a macbook white to which the casing has cracked. It still works perfectly although it's extremely sluggish.

Are these specs any good for basic video editing and complex photo editing

    Macbook 13" Aluminium, 2.0GHz, 160GB, 2GB
Processor: 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo
Display: 13" inch LED-backlit glossy widescreen
    Memory: 2GB RAM
    Storage: 160GB Hard Drive
    Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M

I have seen this model on sale for 599. It's a lot of money as I don't really have the budget to splash out on a top of the range machine.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks

That sounds like a 2007 MacBook which I have.
You can upgrade the RAM and HD easily enough but the problem really lies with the onboard graphics with that machine.
Video editing may be heavy lifting for that machine - final cut probably won't run.
Photo editing should be ok but I found working with RAW 20mb files extremely slow on that MacBook.

    Thanks for your advice.

I would plan on upgrading the ram to about 8GB and then possibly putting a bigger hard disk into it. I'm just wondering whether the graphics card would be better than the Intel X100 that's in my current machine.

The Core 2 Duo is the current minimum processor specification required to run OSX 10.7.x. With developer releases of OSX 10.8 beta in circulation, maybe look at upping the budget to a newer spec processor and graphics card.

That Macbook can only use a max 3gb ram afaik.

A mac mini might be the best option:
