Help needed picking a bike

How's it going. It's another thread seeking help in picking a bike. I have €1500 to spend on a good bike. I would like a nice summer racing bike. I mainly cycle but also do tri's (middle distance) but don't think I would be able justify having a TT bike for only 2 or 3 tri's a year.
I don't mind secondhand or new and I've been looking at a Trek 5.2 on ebay that looks good and is within my budget. I don't really have a great knowledge outside the big brands like Trek, Giant, Shimano, etc etc.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

This, this or this. The X RT-57 is a supposedly stiffer frame so it should be better suited for most tri events.

There is a Planet X dealer in Athlone who, as far as I know, has a price match policy regarding the prices on the UK website.

Thanks for that. I've actually been looking at PX bikes this afternoon. They seem to get cracking reviews and the running gear looks great for the price. Would these be comparable to the Madone 5.2. (Sorry about the Trek fixation, I am an advertisers wet dream, I believe all the hype)

I'd be more excited by the arrival of a new bike. The warrenty on bikes tends not to be transferable so this might be something for you to consider if purchasing a secondhand bike. If you're looking to buy it from ebay make sure that the seller ships to Ireland and won't be charging a crazy amount for doing so. You wouldn't get to see it or test it before you buy it. There could be a multitude of things wrong with it that pictures won't show.

Regarding the 5.2 vs the X RT-57 I can't speak from first hand experience. The current Madone 5.2 bottom bracket is a BB90 so it should be very stiff. I would rather the SRAM components of the PX over the Shimano on the Trek but that's just a personal choice. I've had experience of a PX Pro Carbon and a Madone 4 Series. I preferred the PX. Are you sure that the Trek is suitably sized? You could get fitted for the PX.

There are hundreds of bikes you could buy for 1500 quid. That price is more or less the crossover between aluminium and carbon frames.

Just don't buy an ugly one.

Gone down a different path now. Going to go with a TT bike. I have a decent enough road bike (Giant Defy 3), so I decided no sense having two road bikes. Thanks for all the help. I'll head off over to the A/R/T section for a bit of help now, save I get lynched by talking about Tri's here.

Forget the 'Tri' part and ask for advice regarding a Time Trial bike. They ain't very comfortable and tend to be pretty crap for climbing hills and are generally more expensive than road bikes. With this in mind, would you really get much use out of it? Again, I'd suggest Planet X for best-bang-for-buck. For a similar price you'll probably only get aluminium elsewhere.
