Asus is a solid brand, and the specs look reasonable.

Only worry is why I cannot find that laptop for sale elsewhere which leads me to think its been discontinued.

Likely. Can only find this used one elsewhere also.

    *edit

That was all that came up on the search, but just realised it's a totally different model. Apologies.

Could that be why its cheaper than similar spec'd laptops?

Here's the Asus downloads page, which includes the manual and everything else.

This one would do just as well http://www.komplett.ie/Komplett/product/ZKB_02PC/02_NOTEBOO/21_15/productdetails/80003355/Asus_15_6_K53SC_SX451V_i7_2670QM_8GB_750GB/90N8LC155H1A34VL133Y/default.aspx.

Most important things for pro-level video editing in terms of hardware is a strong processor and a fast hard drive (HDD). I7 is the best you can get atm, the HDD in most laptops however are only average, including the two mentioned here. Ideally you'd want at a solid state drive (SSD) much much faster than HDD's, or at the very least a 7200rpm HDD, (this laptop has a 5400rpm one).

Only problem is of course is price, you wont find an i7 with a decent sized SSD for less than 1000 euro at least. That said don't let it put you off, you can always but now and upgrade the HDD to an SSD yourself later (very easy to do and cheaper), and really it's the less important component, compared to the CPU.

Final thing to consider is the screen quality. Most laptops have a resolution of 1366x768, or in other words 720p. This is fine for most, however if your doing this professionally you'll want at least 1600x900 (900p). Some laptops even go as high as 1920x1080 (1080p,full HD). Again though this option is pricey.

Don't rush things and shop around, check out other sites like saveonlaptops, computeruniverse, and hardwaversand and even dell have a decent deal on the deals section of the site.

Personally I'm not a fan of Samsung but the spec of that one certainly looks good, certainly enough for what you want to do. I've seen that same Samsung with different spec in person and the build looks/feels very nice and solid.

It's 5400rpm as opposed to 7200rpm. Would that make much of a difference? Seems like a very hi-spec item for its value otherwise.

It doesn't make a huge difference normally unless you're moving large files frequently, which you are, but drive cache becomes important then too, the more cache the better that is. For eg. The difference between a 750gb 16mb cache 5400rpm drive and a 500gb 8mb cache 7200rpm drive performance wise is almost nothing. Especially considering the drive density as the drive isn't physically larger when it has more Gb's.
The 5400rpm may even perform better with the spec comparison made above.

Just to add this in but would you consider using a Macbook pro with final cut pro for video editing? It's in your price range and it seems to be going that way these days with professional video editing. I've used both Final cut pro and Adobe premier and I have to admit I preferred final cut by a long shot.

I'm just out of college and macs and FCP is what I'm used to. Only thing is the above Samsung costs around 1000e, while a similar spec Macbook comes in at around 2500e. It's definitely something I'm looking at though.

Have you been keeping an eye on screen resolution and quality? I'd imagine that for professional video editing you'd want the highest resolution available and the best screen quality - (the laptops you've posted are all 1600x900).

The Dell XPS 15 has a true RGB LED 1080p monitor - RGB panels are much better than WLED panels due to 95% Adobe Colour gamut vs about 70%. Strangely enough, the XPS 17 is only available in WLED (although it is 120Hz 3D capable).
