I have recently returned to Ireland after working abroad for a year.

I went on casual work job seekers allowance at the end of the December as I am only working 1 day a week.

I have done a bit of web design in the past and have had alot of interest from potential clients since returning home.

I want to go legit but at the same time don't want to lose my dole if I am only going to be getting freelance jobs here and there.

I see there is a back to work allowance scheme but I would have to wait until December to apply as it says I need to be getting allowance for 12 months.

I really want to do things above board.
Is there any other path I can take?

You won't lose your dole just by doing odd jobs here and there. As long as you're still looking and available for alternative full-time work and you're not working more than 3 days a week you can retain your Jobseekers payment.

The income that you get will be deducted from your claim, but you will be building up your client base. You can average your earnings from self-employment out over a representative period (13, 26 or 52 weeks for example) so that you maintain a constant level of Jobseekers payment.

The Back to Work Enterprise Allowance is only permitted for full-time businesses, so keep this in mind for the future.

So do I register as a sole trader with revenue or just tell the dole office I am doing some freelance work?

you can apply for short term enterprise allowance where you get to keep your social welfare while establishing your business. talk to your local enterprise board. they are usually very helpful.

Short Term Enterprise Allowance is only for those in receipt of Jobseeker's Benefit, not Allowance.
OP, maybe go speak with the job facilitator in your local office, and/or your local partnership about this in detail. They will be able to advise you best.
