Hey guys i need some advice, My focus died last week, 05 petrol 220k km on the clock.

Ford have said i need a new\second hand engine that their is a hole in a piston.

Ive gone and got myself a diesel as a do a lot of driving, but am looking for advice on how to get rid of the old focus as i havent a clue.

How much do you reckon i would get for it? Ive already had a bit of interest from a mechanic a friend knows.

also what do i need to do when getting rid of the car, is there a form to change ownership i need to fill in, i dont want to get stung for anything down the road.

    Thanks a lot

You can scrap it, fix it and sell it, or sell it as is as a damaged repairable.

If you scrap it you should get a certificate of destruction which will get it out of your name.

If you sell it, you just transfer ownership the normal way.

It will come down to money.

You can ring around scrap yards and ask for offers, get a price to repair and subtract from the expected sales price, and check out what similar damaged cars are going for (around €2-3K at a glance).

Has your friends mechanic friend made an offer?

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles to avoid the DRS fee.

Did they offer any explanation of how it got a hole in a piston?

Presumably it was running badly before the failure?

No explanation, in fairness i do a lot of driving, I live in Athy and work in Dublin city centre.

When it went i was driving up a bit of a hill and it was losing power so i dropped back to 4th and heard a noise, i pulled off to the side and the engine went off, power steering etc. it splutters when you turn on the engine and will cut out if you dont keep the revs up.

I was hoping it might be the coil initially but i changed that and it was the same then the ford garage told me it was a hole in the piston and id need a new\second hand engine.

Ive since got myself another car, diesel, and am just trying to find out what the focus is worth and whats the best way to get rid of it.

    Fair enough,

The only reason I ask it that many garages will just tell people an engine is gone rather then try to diagnose a problem that's not obvious.

High mileage or driving up a hill could not cause a piston to fail. There would have to have been a serious fuelling issue or some other issue to cause that.

    To Nissan Doctor,
I had a problem with a ford focus, it was two years old, the garage man in Drogheda told me it needed a new engine, I queried this, saying how could that be it was only two years old, he said that was that and it would cost 2000 for a new engine, I new someone in the motor trade who got a specialist to look at it, it didnt need a new engine it needed something blowed out cant remember what now, anyway it is now 11 years old, still going strong and it only cost 400 to fix. Moral of the story, dont trust everyone automaticaly, alway get second opinion.

Ive had issues before with water getting into the top of the engine, it seems to be an issue on the focus ive heard from a few people, i dunno if that helped along the problem. i got a bit of plexi glass shaped to go over the engine to keep the water dropping on it. the coil has gone twice in the last 2 years because of that.

getting a second opinion on it will be difficult now as i cant really drive it anywhere, the ford garage said it was burning a lot of oil while i was driving it and there was a lot of smoke coming out the exhaust when i turn on the engine.

I dunno what to do to be honest,
