Guide Price on my car??

I am thinking of changing my current car but have no idea of what it might be worth (other than not a lot!).

It's a 1999 mercedes E300TD estate automatic (Classic). Not a 7 seater unfortunately. Its got about 185k miles up on it and still goes great and is in fantastic condition for its age.

THe tax is killing me on it and I am thinking of a smaller engine for lower tax and better fuel economy.

Any ideas of what it might be worth in a private sale? I will only have a max of 5k for a new purchase. Would it be worth trading in ?

I'm guessing I might get 2k on a private sale or 1k trade in?

I've seen a newer e220cdi estate with lower miles for under 5k I am interested in. Possibly a Saab diesel also.. DOing about 15k miles annually.

What do you think it might be worth? Am I mad considering changing it given my budget?

    Is it NCTd?
Can't see you getting €2000 privately for it even with a years test tbh.

Yep, it's NCT'ed for another 12 months alright. WOuld you think 1k is more on the mark?

I got €1500 on a trade in for an 98 E200 Classic auto before Christmas so you might get close to that.

    Against what car?

That's pretty good. I'd be very happy with a trade in figure like that.

Personally I'd be inclined to keep it. You have a non common rail Merc, less problematic and will probably go forever with the right maintainance. That's just my opinion though :)

I know where you are coming from with the tax part mind you... Tax would be somewhere in the region of 900 for an E220 (open to corrections)

    That's the conundrum...

I can't afford to tax it for the year in one go so do in in 3 monthly chunks, so tax is costing about €1,600 p.a. COuld possibly do the tax for a 220 in one go and at €885, its not far off halving the bill.

Also, I am assuming it would be more economical. The 300 is getting average very low 30's mpg and i would expect the 220 to do late 30's early 40's.

That could equate to about 500 litres of fuel annually, another big saving.

Tradeins are normally totally dependant on what you trade in against, rather than the actual value of the car.

I cant see a dealer giving €1500 in real terms for that car tbh. It wouldnt make him anything then if he sold it. Id say more than likely the selling price of the car you purchased was inflated to allow a larger discount/trade in.

Thanks for the replies, good to get different opinions.

i'd be happy with 1k for a trade-in as it would save me the hassle of a private sale.

I just need to do some research now on whether moving to a 02 cdi is a good idea seeing as I have a td.

Hi iam a newbee to boards.ie,would you consider looking at a classic car, their are quite a few classic diesel mercs out there also other makes in diesel considering tax on a classic is €52 a year any engine size and insurance can be cheap if you join a classic car club.don"t know if this would be of intrest to you but i done it last year never owned anything over 1.6 in the 20yrs iam driving.now have a 2.1 1977 volvo automatic €240 fully comp.If i had the funds you have would have been a 2.5 TDI range rover or 280/300 merc.check it out you may be surprised at what you find out.:) Your car is worth more private than trade in i know it can be a hassle selling private some times but its worth it in the longrun, its always up to you at the end of the day.

I've been down the classic route before, but as this is our main car, I wouldn't do it again. Also, don't have a garage and never liked having an old car exposed to the elements. Maybe sometime in the future, I'll get another..

The 220 I was interested in was snapped out quickly, was gone when I rang about it.

I did have a look at this and was offered €1,500 for my Merc as a trade-in, but fuel economy on the petrol versions doesn't seem to be great, so we're not running with that. But it was a lovely car to drive, with a huge spec.

So at the moment, we're looking at keeping our Merc and making it more economical by paying the tax in one go (gulp), saving about €300pa and also driving more conservatively and seeing how we do with fuel economy.

Think you're doing the right thing , the devil you know etc. If that merc is going well for you then you know what you have. While the other one is costing you 800 euro extra in tax , any problem with a modern car will easily come up to 800 , know of a guy who replaced the starter on a 220 cdi and it cost 850 at a main dealer. This tax thing has people driven a bit crazy and while I can understand those not wanting to shell out 600 to 800 on tax , some people are trading cars and spending 15 to 20 k to reduce their annual tax bill by 4 or 500. Now in my estimation that is economic suicide :D But then again we are all different and I suppose in the current climate we should be grateful that at least someone is spending money and the government and the garages will benefit. :D
