I have asked that question at the N.C.T. office in Ennis when I have been clearing a Classic car. The Information I got was you must have a V 5, which will have all the relivent information on it, and a RECIEPT from the person you buy it from.If you look at the N.C.T web site, you will get all the information of there requirements, and can down load the form that you need to fill in when making the application. Make sure that you know which Reg. No. you want,I.E. Your County one, ( ie. 75 CE 12345 ) or an ZV Plate which does not show the year, but implies that the car is over 30 Years old, you need to make this known to the inspector at the time. Before you buy the car, make sure that the CHASSIS No. on the car is the same as that in the V 5. You must find it on the body work, NOT the plate that is usually revited on the panel in front of the radiotar, the N.C.T. inspector will NOT ACCEPT this. I hope this will be of help, best of luck with your venture, and enjoy it.

Make sure you are getting a very good price for it, as you will have to go through this although it should be the seller responsibility. ;)

    Errm yes they will.

Last time I went in to clear a Merc, He just looked at the plate checked against the V5... Job done.

And anyway, The likes of a Mk1 Escort only have the VIN on that plate.

If it's a common car, There's no hassle to it.. Just right out a receipt with a date on it within the previous month, Make sure the VIN on V5 and VIN plate match and pay your €200. Sorted.

For VRT you will need the following.
    NCT/VRT appointment.
MOT or a roadworthiness inspection by NCT.
    Photo ID.
    PPS no..
    Proof of address.
Purchase receipt.(You can wright this yourself)
    Shipping/ferry receipt
    €200.
You may not get your reg. on the day, depends if they have a stat code. You can choose the reg type when paying.
The VIN plate was ok for me.

Yes they will...........I cleared a Marina while holding the plate in my hand. In fairness the screws had snapped while I was working on it and it was pretty clear it belonged there so they were happy enough.

The rest of the advice is good though. The V5 may be missing one section which is sent to the DVLA to confirm that the car has been permanently exported

From the various comments that have been made,I wonder do different N.C.T. inspectors have different requirements? Anytime that I have taken a car to Ennis, the Inspector always insists on checking the Vin No on the body, as well as the No on the plate. I have never been asked for a M.O.T. for any of the cars. I believe you can not get a N.C.T. for a car until it is re-regestered, and then it is only required if it is post Jan. 1980

the V5C should not be missing ANY sections (but it probably doesnt matter if the export part is missing)

The Export part is for the Uk guy who is the Registered Owner to export the car HIMSELF.

In cork in the old days, some would check the chassis number on the body matched the V5C and some wouldn't even leave the office! The guy in Mallow was a holy terror and I used to avoid him and go to Cork. Once he spent ages tracing the engine number off the block because he couldn't see it to make sure it matched the engine no on the logbook (as if that mattered in any way!)

I wish I had that Mallow guy :P

Due to the lazyarsedness of the NCT person I had, they copied the engine number for the V5C (which was incorrect) instead of using the correct one I filled in on the paperwork. They wouldn't change it (quick enough to take money and all that). Now I've got to trudge down to some Main dealer or Motor Trader with a DoE garage code and go to the Motor Tax office to do it
