ebays policy on bid retraction?

I bid on a Soap and Glory product on Friday evening. Yesterday I was in Boots and saw that they have a three for two offer on Soap and Glory so I bought three products, including the one I had bid on. I emailed the seller once I got home to ask if I could retract the bid I had made. This was about 11/12 hours before the auction ended.

I'm not a very frequent user of ebay and have never retracted a bid before. My understanding of the process is that I can ask the seller to cancel my bid but they are not obliged to do so. I got a message today about 5 minutes before the auction ended, saying that my bid had been retracted, the item was going to now sell for a lower price, and the seller was going to report me for breaking a legally binding contract.

Morally I know it was wrong of me to cancel my bid because I found a better offer, but I never refused to pay for the item. The seller accepted my request to cancel my bid. As far as I was aware this was him essentially agreeing to terminate our contract. If he had not accepted my request I would have paid for the item, as I would not want to get an unpaid item strike against my account. Am I in breach of ebays policies? Are they likely to take his complaint seriously? I wish I'd just paid for it now!

No contract is formed until the auction ends.

You didn't win the auction, so there's nothing the seller can do to you. The seller also accepted your bid retraction, which he didn't have to, so if it's on him if the item sells for a lower price now. He could have denied you the retraction, then non-paying bidder system would be open to him.
