I'm just trying to think of Irish born men now managing abroad in the game. Just been watching Pat Fenlon getting interviewed and got me wondering.

Brian Kerr with the Faroe Islands. I think David O'Leary was in charge of a team in the UAE

Tough one because we might not know if they were actually Irish born.

Brian Kerr and Roddy collins were but not anymore

Aye it's a tough one maybe if I broaden the list to include Irish capped but then you'll have people like Owen Coyle included on the list and I wouldn't really class him as Irish

You have the right to an Irish passport. He might not have an Irish passport!

I doubt if Peter Robinson has an Irish Passport or many Linfield fans.

Seán Connor is managing in Zimbabwe of all places.

No, but they have the right to be recognised as Irish should they wish.

Liam Brady managed Foreign clubs - obviously born in Dublin and played junior football in Ireland and then played in England and most famously Italy where they worship him. He went on to to manage Glasgow Celtic Of Scotland and Brighton in England.

Stephen Kenny played a few times in the LOI (less than 10) and managed teams in the Republic, NI and and Scotland)

Damien Richardson has played in Ireland and England and has managed in England, Ireland and the Peoples Republic of Cork

Pretty sure John Giles managed some team in States.

Vancover or some crowd like that

David O'Learys Brother who played for Shamrock Rovers left for Vancover Whitecap so you might be right. Pierce was his name. His son Ryan turned down the chance to play for Ireland and instead turned out for the scottish U-21s.

This has actually got me wondering. Over all the years we have people playing for Ireland on the "Granny Rule". Do/did these players have/had to be holding an Irish passport to play?

Checked wiki and once its correct Giles did indeed manage Whitecaps.:)

I knew there was some big name I was missing. Patrick O Connell managed Barcelona and actually saved the club at one stage.

edit: should have read the op a bit better :-)

Yep I think there is a thread somewhere dedicated to this fella. When I was looking for Irish managers today I can across him again on Wiki. A truly remarkable and sad story.I believe(correct me if wrong) he died unknown, heavy drinker in a hospice and alone..

He actually won La Liga with Betis

Johnny Carey, who famously played with Johnny Giles at United, managed Nottm Forest in the 60s. He guided them to 2nd place in '67 behind the great United team that went on to conquer Europe the following year.

There is also Joe Kinnear. Who had many successes with Wimbledon, and also managed Luton, Forest and Newcastle. I don't know how he developed such a thick cockney accent though, considering that he was born and bred in Dublin, only leaving for England at 20.

While still manager of Rovers in the LOI!!! Can't remember the exact details but he had some arrangement whereby he went over to Canada a few weeks before the LOI season ended to manage Whitecaps for their summer season and back to Rovers in the autumn. Lasted 2, maybe 3 seasons up to him leaving Rovers in '83.

fifa brought in a rule before the 94 world cup that you had to have the passport of the country you're representing. it was a bit of a story back then about rushing through an application for jason mcateer.

Not a clue unfortunately. One other daft aspect to the story, Pierce O'Leary moved from Rovers to Whitecaps in one of those years!

A few Irish guys followed him over there for brief-ish spells, Jimmy Holmes, Liam Buckley, Harry Kenny and Mick Martin.
