Glow plug resistance readings

    Hello all,

    The engine in question is a VW 1.9 VE TDI with an AGR engine code.

    I have a service coming up and I thought I'd check out the glow plugs as the car has a first start issue, it chugs a bit and then starts. It never doesn't start but when the temp drops it gets much much worse and can take up to 5 to 8 long seconds to get going with plooms of white smoke as a result.

    So, I took a look at the GP's and I checked their resistance. I have no idea what the numbers mean so from what I have below I either have 1 working or 3 working plugs. Maybe even the one(s) that are closer to working range are just tired and arent showing the figure they should be.

    From drivers side to passenger side the readings are:
    0.6, 0.4. 8.4, 0.5.

    Any thoughts?

    Number 3 has too high a resistance. Should be around 0.3 ohms give or take. They are a consumable item so were it mine, Id stick a set in, prob no more than 50 yoyos a set.

    BBK did you take off the wires that go on to them. They should be off and you should be getting 0.5 ohms each. Number three looks dodgy.

    Howdy,

    I took the wiring harness off the plugs. Crocodile clipped the neg to the battery and tested the tip of each glowplug.

    I think there is a timing problem with the engine which is not helping starting but a new set of plugs wouldnt go a miss anyway.

    The car is 12 years old and I have no idea when they were changed last.

    Bosch ok? I was going to do it myself.

    You cant go wrong with Bosch IMO.

    Just on this topic, I changed the glow plugs in my 1.9 Partner van today. She was after turning in to a right b1tch to start. She really loves her heat!!! After a bit of ringing around, to my surprise, the best value I found was at my local Main Stealer. That being said, I think that just over 80 quid a set was a bit steep but when I threw in the air filter, they were the cheapest quote.

    The plugs were easy enough to remove once I managed to get the top of the intake manifold to separate. It was gummed in solid by gunk from the EGR valve. I cleaned that out while I was at it, threw in a new air filter and now she's back to her reliable old self again.. I'm going to miss that old van when I'll have to sell her later in the year. :(
