Any of you go to the coin fair at the RDS? Pick up anything nice? I got there pretty late and was on a set mission to collect coins ordered and deliver coins to some dealers. So I didn't really have much time to look around for bargains.

Apart from the obvious boring 2012 Euros I picked up some 1961 mules, an 'Exploded flan' error Irish half crown in copper and an intricately gold and enameled Irish 10p Bank token. Not your usual enameled crap that you find, this really caught my eye. Not really bargains either, even though I got them all at half the original asking price, but sure they're for my own collection. Can post pics if anyone's interested.

I was there on Saturday, bought 2 souvenir sets, a pair of Pearse 10 shillings in uncirculated condition and a 1928 half crown (nothing special). Tried to sell a 100 euro Irish Euro banknote but had no luck.

I saw a 1927 Irish pattern coin, didn’t even bother to ask for the price, only asked the dealer to show it to me, totally amazed by it, that was the highlight of my day.

A Morbiducci pattern. Many people wonder why his designs lost to Percy Metcalfe's. Percy was English, the coins were to be minted by the Royal mint in London and the whole independence thing, I call shenanigans!

I remember at one of the coin fairs years ago, a dealer who I didn't even know at the time, and for no particular reason, took one of these patterns out of his top pocket and handed it to me to look at. The thing is it wasn't even protected, he handed me the actual coin, I was like "don't drop it, don't drop it". Jaysus I'da had that in a capsule at least. At the time I think that was valued at around 7 grand.

Mestrovic was another designer who submitted his design for the Irish coinage, but he didn't get them in on time. However it was later adopted as the seal of the Irish Central bank and minted on silver commemoratives in 2007: http://irishcoins.com/?id=5354

I'll get some pics up of the coins I got at the fair, the horse is barely visible on the exploded side so not sure if it will come out in a pic.

Here's some pics. The enameled coin isn't really showing up well in the pics, it's much more pleasing to the eye. You can just about make out the horse on the exploded side of the half crown. It's dark copper in colour but I don't know if that was a result of the gas explosion or if it was struck on a copper flan. It's milled edge naturally as it was stuck as a half crown and about half the thickness of a normal half crown.

that halfcrown is nice, would mind that for my own collection
would you mind sending me a pm of the ballpark of what you paid for it, just for reference as there is very little to go on valuation wise for anything like this, if you dont want to i compleatly understand

do you think the token was enameled at the time as i bought a pound recently that looks similar

Really sorry I missed it now. Will there be another one this year or is it an annual event? Were there many dealers? And, last but not least, was there much in the way of ancient coins?

    Lovely coins btw blade.

No probs, I can tell you here. I got the half crown for 20 euro, he had it marked at 45 euro but I got him down. He admitted he didn't know what it was worth and said that as he found it in a box of junk coins, he'd give it to me for 20. It is hard to value it as you say, I've not seen one before. But I'd imagine it would fetch a lot more if I stuck it on ebay.

I suppose it's impossible to tell if the enameling is contemporary but I'm guessing it is. Possibly done later in Victorian times when that craze really took off. I just think it's a bit unusual for someone to have done it recently on such an old token of high grade. But then again you never know.

Thanks. Yes there's usually a smaller fair on at the RDS around April, but not confirmed yet. I tend not to bother with that one though as there's not as many foreign dealers. But there's definitely another big one in October.

There was a handful of dealers with ancient coins alright, a lot of high end coins though with big price tags. I tend to stick to Roman Imperial silvers under 100 euro, there's enough of them to collect without having to get into the expensive stuff.

I saw something I thought was a bit interesting. It was an official central bank issue of uncirculated 2008 Euro coins in a card folder. It wasn't the usual set for 2008 (Newgrange I think). It was one specifically for Central Bank employees, only commemorating the tenth anniversary of the setting of up of the ECB I think. I didn't buy it as it was 140 but I would imagine it would have been produced in a quite limited run.

Blade drop me an E-Mail if you hear anything more about a fair in April. I bought a few BU decimal coins from Andrew Auld and would love to get a few more without having to wait until October.

Those sets were knocking about for 40-50 Euro a couple of years ago. I certainly wouldn't pay 140 for them. I'm sure I'll only forget to contact you, best thing is if you keep an eye on the RDS website for the upcoming events, there may not be any mention of coins but it should say Stamp fair anyway. The two are always combined.

I can give you Andrew's number if you want, but I don't know if he'll post stuff out, you may have to go to him in Wicklow. Was it just loose BU Decimal coins you're looking for?

140 seemed a bit steep for such a plain folder alright.

If you wouldn't mind PM'ing or E-Mailing me Andrew's number or E-Mail address that would be great. I don't live far from Wicklow so meeting him is not a problem.

Yes, loose BU decimal coins in my latest obsession (for now).

Have recently come into the possession of both Irish and British pre decimalisation coins. All coins have been in circulation. I know nothing about coins, but I need to sell them for the best price possible. To save work can I assume that all copper Irish coins from 1950 to 1968 have no worth and just take them to the Central Bank for exchange? Most of the Irish silver coins are well worn, what can I do with these? Should I wait for the next Coin Fair?

With pre decimal you should be able to get above face value, so best bet would be to either sell them on ebay as an auction lot or Adverts, or just flog them to a dealer but you won't get as much. The next Coin Fair is on Sunday 15th April at the RDS, Anglesea Rd. entrance.
