Graphics Card Problem

Hi, i recently upgraded our PC with a new graphics card (went from a Ati 4670 to a 6770)

All was well for a while but i've noticed now that the graphics card fan is only spinning for a second or 2, then stopping for the same amount of time and starting again and stopping again... and so forth.

I checked all the connections are ok everywhere and reset the cmos in case there were any dodgy settings, still the same situation... although it should be noted, when i moved the jumper on the cmos and powered it up, the fan kept going consistently (maybe if this is significant, i'm not an expert!)

Does anyone have any solution or suggestion to sort this?

    Additional info...

I didn't have a 6 pin plug on my PSU for the card so i bought a (2 plug) molex to 6 pin adapter to use for it instead, could this be the issue? the IT guy whom i bought it from assured me it would be fine for the purpose i was buying it for

    Cheers

What brand PSU is it? How old is it? What's the Wattage?

    It's an Akasa Ak-PR460FG

460W, about 4 or maybe 5 years old

It was actually spinning constantly when i turned the PC on this morning, but it's doing the stopping thing again now after i've put the sound card back in.

For your graphics card the minimum required PSU is 450W, however I'd say it's the PSU that's causing the issue. I don't think there is enough power getting to the card. If you can, go back to the IT guy and ask if you can test a PSU above 500W and if it works you'll buy it from him.

Definitely sounds like your computer is struggling for power if it was fine with no soundcard in.

I ordered a new PSU anyway as the one i have now is quite old and i'll be looking to add more ram and a blu-ray soon so i'll need the extra power at some point!

I can't really see what else it would be anyway! we'll see tomorrow, ordered a OCZ 650W ZS Series ATX Power Supply on the next day delivery service from MemoryC.ie

    Cheers.

Got a new power pack and installed it.... same problem. Pretty annoying.

It could be the motherboard or the card itself acting the maggot so... do you have another computer you can try the card in?

Not really at the mo. I put the older 4670 back in the meantime and it's working fine. Might have to send the card back.

So launch the Graphics Control Panel (Start > "AMD Vision Engine Control Center")

You're looking for the AMD Overdrive Option under the Performance tab. Unlock the settings, and (don't have to touch the clocks) but enable manual fan control, and force it to about 35-40%.

Cheers but i tried that already, i put it all the way to 100% and it made no difference at all. It was still stopping and starting all the time.

    Bummer. RMA it.

the fan itself might be faulty.... in which case you have 3 options

    1. rma it if still in warranty
    2. remove the gcard's heatsink and fan and replace it with a 3rd party heat sink and fan suitable for your gcard.
    3. buy a new gcard
