    Hi all :)

Quick question, I have a K&N 57i on my van. Since putting the cat back on there's quite an embarrassing induction noise from the K&N that was masked by the decat.

Any way of quietening it down? Just out of curiosity :)

No option of the standard airbox as it was smashed to pieces :(

    Thanks :)

Have you got the felt spec pigeon noise going on now?:P

Wouldn't bother with K&N. I think they're a gimmick that makes FA difference to performance. I'm suspicious of an air filter that I can see through.

Ah but mine is different, I modified it so it works better than just sucking in hot air, I brought it down to the front of the bumper using mandrel bent mild steel pipe where it gets a decent supply of air. Not the usual tat out of the box :)

Just don't drive through any floods! The amount of people I heard of driving through floods with low open filters...

Are you talking about the actual K&N brand or the generic cheap cone filters that everyone call K&N's?

I do be very careful in the wet :)

It's the real deal not a twin cone or max power job :)

For proper k&n filters you can get a water sock that covers it, will work with anything less than immersion. Doesnt lessen airflow much. I use one on my quad for endurance racing:)

I don't know whether this can happen on other vehicles but on Td5 Land Rovers the oil in a K&N filter can cause the MAF sensor to fail, especially if it's over oiled after cleaning. I use a sticky ITG filter in mine.

I've heard of that too on some engines that use an air mass meter to determine how much load the engine is under as opposed to a TPS :)

Edit: Looking into ITG filters, their site shows they offer a far superior flow rate than a cotton cone filter, videos on youtube also show that the filters aren't too loud :)

How much did yours set you back?

I think this is the solution! :)

Ah ITG... A proper filter ;)

The MAF is attached to the air filter box on a Td5 so which probably makes matters worse. Mind you, they die randomly anyway!

I got mine from one of the UK Land Rover tuners (don't laugh, it's big business!) for £45 plus postage. Horrible sticky thing to handle, recently cleaned mine after 3 years and around 50k.

Using a ITG in the s2000, highly recommend it.

Ya I use ITG myself, I've a maxogen airbox but I'm running an open filter in my current car because I'm not buying a bracket to fit my airbox, I'll keep that for the race car :)

The oil is horrible stuff altogether, there's also another repellent spray you can add after the oil and it helps keep it clean

Well seeing as you all use and recomend ITG I think I'll go that way myself when I have a few quid to spare, they seem far quieter and far superior than a K&N :)

My old Fiesta had 2 MAF sensors near the airbox and a third one on the tb, overkill 9000  needless to say they can and do give bother now and again :(

We have a 109 FFR here, I know there are a lot of specialists out there! :D Land Rover tuners is another one to add to the books :)

There was a competition amongst the tuners to see who could build the fastest Td5 Defender at one of the drag strips in the UK. I think Twisted Performance won with over 200bhp and 120mph. Involves remapping, big intercooler and a VNT turbo amongst other tweaks. The latset is chucking TDV6 out of a D3 in and a TDV8 out of a rangie has been done as well.

I don't think it'll be much quieter tbh, IMO they are a superior filter, I used to sell them and we always say increases on the dyno when they were used.
