Looking to repeat 6th year. My minds set on the Institute of Education. I just have some minor setback questions. I'd appreciate all answers.

Is the interview prior to acceptance hard to pass? I've been told it can be quite rough especially if you achieved terrible results in your previous LC.

    Do we get a book-list
? gosh for 6750, I thought it would cover books and materials.

Is there a separate price you have to pay in order to use the supervised study or even the study hall? It would be nice to study somewhere with a similar atmosphere. Tends to help me concentrate.

I am doing a couple of new subjects, so do you think it would be wise that I repeat both 5th and 6th year or should I stick to 6th? I'm afraid I wont get the whole curriculum covered in 1 year.

Last question is kinda of broad so bare with me, what are the top 10 subjects that are both the easiest grade to achieve and the shortest course to learn?

    Thanks.

I cannot answer these Q's as I don't go to the Institute, I attended a course there at Christmas and thought it was a fantastic school though! In terms of the top 10 subjects, I believe the following are meant to be the easiest subjects, whether or not the courses are short I don't know as I don't do somw of them:

    - Economics
    - Music
    - Business
    - Geography
    - Ag-Science
    - Technology
    - Construction Studies
    - Japanese
    - Applied Maths

** All of these subjects vary across a wide spectrum of skills you may posess (from linguistic to a more logical person)

I personally do the first 4 subjects I listed and find them very easy! I took up Economics myself last February (5th year) and hope to have achieved a B2 + in my HL Mock I took a little over a week ago! So this one is very possible to get done in a year especially if you have a teacher (I have no teacher, I just use the marking schemes, book and papers)..

I don't know anything about the Institute but I'd say the easiest subject to do in one year is Phys/Chem. I'm doing it in one year and by Christmas I had done more than enough to pass the paper. The course is extremely short and predictable. Easiest 100 points you'll ever get!

I know someone repeating in the Institute who took up Ag-Sci for the year. She says it's a good subject if you need to replace a harder one

I heard the opposite. I was told chem/phys were one of the hardest subjects to do.

Well Chemistry is meant to be tough and Physics is probably very hard too, but the combined Phys/Chem course is very easy. There's loads of choice (you do 6 questions out of 12, 3 Physics ones and 3 Chemistry ones). The questions are so repetitive though. All you have to do is learn short laws and definitions, the odd experiment, and then just practise exam questions. About 13 or 14% of students get As in it (that's probably actually A1s), which is several times more than the usual percentage of As per subject.

Obviously if you hate Science I'd stay away from it, but even if you did it's still easy to do well in.

Is the interview prior to acceptance hard to pass?
I wouldnt say its hard to pass as they will accept you as long as you show a willingness to study and do the best you can. I had a good interview as I had good results from 5th year and they acceped me straight away. However my friend who is repeating had a tough time in the interview. She was asked why she didnt get 600 points and all this (she didnt do bad when she previously did the leaving!) But other than that you have nothing to worry about :)

Do we get a book-list? Yes there is a book list given at the start of the year but you do not need to buy any books.. its optional if you want to get books i suppose! if youre doing english you will have to get urself a copy of your single text and any other novels etc. Otherwise the notes are brilliant so you wont need any books.

Is there a separate price you have to pay in order to use the supervised study or even the study hall?
No all supervised study is included. Theres twospacious and bright study halls that are open from about 7.30am - 8pm (9pm later in the year). Also weekend study is included . It is on from 9-4 on a saturday and 1-6 on a sunday. I would definitely make use of the study hall its a great way to get your work done after school and then you can go home and relax.

I am doing a couple of new subjects, so do you think it would be wise that I repeat both 5th and 6th year or should I stick to 6th?
Its a matter of choice. You will definitely cover all of the courses with some time for revision. The teachers solely focus on what you need to know for the exam and exam technique. As i said in the other thread, its no harm doing the 5th year aswell to get the material in your head. In 6th year everything is done in a very short period of time and it can be hard to keep up and needs constant work and revision. But as I said .. do what you think is right for you :)

Last question is kinda of broad so bare with me, what are the top 10 subjects that are both the easiest grade to achieve and the shortest course to learn?

Ag Science is eally popular and it overlaps a lot with biology if you like that sort of thing. I have taken up business in one year and its pretty tough.. But we are almost finished the course now so there is plenty of time for revision!

Any other questions just give me a shout :)

Currently a student there. Interview is just really to familiarise yourself with the place and people - you'll more than likely get in!

There is a booklist, but don't get any til you're told to specifically. I bought two books and haven't opened them once. It's all notes.

Study is from half seven in the morning to 8 at night. That and weekend study (dunno about Saturday but Sunday is 1 to 6) is free.

As for new subjects - everything is covered in a year. I picked up biology and ag science and they're totally doable in a year.

Any more questions, feel free to ask!

Is the interview prior to acceptance hard to pass? The interview is really an attempt to scare you into promising to yourself, and the staff that you'll work. You're told beforehand by someone (friends, family,IOE) that either your JC or LC results will matter for your application. But money talks.

    Do we get a book-list
? Only for certain subjects (only books I have are for classics), most subjects by most teachers are taught using handouts written and printed by the teacher and school and is inclusive with the fee payment.

Is there a separate price you have to pay in order to use the supervised study or even the study hall? No. There is only a fee for non-Institute students.

I am doing a couple of new subjects, so do you think it would be wise that I repeat both 5th and 6th year or should I stick to 6th?
I changed three subjects. I did 5th year once, changed three subjects and decided to redo 5th year and progressed to 6th. It's really your choice, and depends of the subjects. I picked up Chemistry, Biology and Classical Studies. You couldn't have paid me enough for me to attempt them in one year.

what are the top 10 subjects that are both the easiest grade to achieve and the shortest course to learn?
    Avoid:

    Classical Studies
    English
    Any language
    History
    Chemistry

Easy(relative to the student of course):

    Geography
    Biology
    Accounting
    Agricultural science
    Religion
    Agricultural Economics
    Art (prior skill)
    DCG (prior skill)
    Music( prior skill)

    Not supported by IOE:

    - Technology
    - Construction Studies
    - Japanese
    - Engineering
    - Woodwork
    - Metalwork
    - Abnormal languages (such as Russian or Polish- with the exception of Islamic language)
    - Other irregular subjects

ALSO: IOE do not support teaching for Ordinary level subjects other then Irish, Maths, French, and possibly(?) Spanish

Looking to repeat 6th year. My minds set on the Institute of Education. I just have some minor setback questions. I'd appreciate all answers.

Is the interview prior to acceptance hard to pass? I was in fifth form too, but I've heard that it's not bad if you're willing to work.

    Do we get a book-list
? The only books I had to buy were for English and a Biology book. Exam papers aren't required, but handy.

Is there a separate price you have to pay in order to use the supervised study or even the study hall? Nope, study is completely free until 8pm during the week, and it's open on weekends too.

I am doing a couple of new subjects, so do you think it would be wise that I repeat both 5th and 6th year or should I stick to 6th? Just sixth year will be fine. We're almost finished the course in every subject now.

Last question is kinda of broad so bare with me, what are the top 10 subjects that are both the easiest grade to achieve and the shortest course to learn?
    History
    Economics
    Chemistry
    Classics
    Business
    Accounting

    Thanks.

    That's just my experience, mind

People with dyslexia/dyspraxia/handwriting and spelling exemptions, etc were allowed to hand in typed homework assignments in my year. Also I saw one girl using one in my classics class. I'm pretty sure if you don't have any kind of learning difficulty you're not allowed them during school.

Yeah plenty of places around the back, most people locked them to the railings

Hi guys just wondering about the institute revision course for Christmas. My subjects are english,Irish, geography,ag science, biology and business. I'm thinking of going for English. Any reviews on English? And what other subject is worth going for??ˆ Thanks

I went to that last year and tbh I found the english notes just weren't for me but I guess it depends on the person because I'd say others might find them very useful
I found the ag science notes to be brilliant though! Like if you know everything on the notes you're sorted :)

Making your own notes is always much more useful.
