Does anyone know a good (cheap!) hotel in LHR that has good views of the airport/approach path. Have to spend a night there and would love to get a room overlooking the airport!

The following is copied from a thread about heathrow on another site
and is approx 15 months old but I hope it helps.

"One idea you could try is to check the BBC Weather forecast a few days in advance; in recent weeks (looking at Radarvirtuel and Casper.nl) the easterly runways have been in use most of the time. This means no 3pm changeover. If you know how the wind is likely to be (and of course there is a risk that it can change on the day), you can decide where you want to stay.

If, for example, the 09s are in use, you could choose hotels near to the eastern end of the airport, such as the Thistle Hotel (where I stayed - very reasonable), Sofitel (very upmarket/expensive) or Travelodge (v.cheap/good value). There are actually two Travelodges - one v. close to the 27R threshold.

For hotels near the 27 end, the Renaissance is probably the best, since is has a great view on 27R; unfortunately, it is facing the wrong way, so backlighting can be an issue. Also try Jurys (v. convenient to Myrtle Avenue) and the Ibis (close to 27R)."

Are both runways used at the same time in LHR? Im thinking of the Holiday Inn Airtel as its cheap. Just want to make sure I get good views!

Yes! This evening the take off runway was 27R and landing was both 27L and 27R.

The Renaissance has a super view they do a plane spotters package it may not be the cheapest but the views are worth it!! The buses that run around the perimeter road from Heathrow bus terminal are all free and are a great way to get around when spotting;)

I emailed a couple of the Hotels but the holiday inn ariel seemed the best. They said they'll block out a room for me and if I go deluxe it would be top floor but any double will suffice.

So think I'll go for it + free local bus apparently instead of the hotel hoppa.

Is this the one that looks onto RWY27R?

I read a trip report on a.net a while back, the guy was at Hatton Cross in the morning for landings and when they switched runways he was able to go back and take his shots from his room, with no annoying fence in the way!

Yes I would agree that the above is the best way to do Heathrow is staying overnight. If getting a runway view in the Renaissance it is best to travel within a month either side of June 21st to make it worth while in terms of evenings where the sun is behind you.

I would also add that if travelling back by air from Heathrow to Ireland pass security early and divert down to T1 8 gates and you can get shots similar to this http://jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=6870443&nseq=44
Also make sure that runway 27R is in use for landings from 15:00 on(there are sites you can check this )If the easterly runways are in use all of the above is up in the air and only taxi shots will be obtained...but "nothing ventured"and you know the rest :)
