    Hi

Just back from hilly 22k to notice bruising around the base & side of my right calf muscle...the left feels bruised but nothing visible! Hate hills & did feel a real burn on one today but this seems really weird! Anyone any experience of this or advice to give?

    Cheers :)

Probably a small muscle tear if its not too sore. RICE it, take a few days off, and if it deteriorates as you go next time out, RICE it some more.

Fun-knee-ly enough:pac:, I just had the same issue with one of my kneee's last week after a few long runs, which were mainly on hills. I thought I was after picking up the dreaded runners knee, when a few days later a fairly big bruise appeared on my left kneee. i was a bit confused to say the least as I know I wasn't after giving it a bang. I noticed that my thigh muscle was fairly painful from the inside top right down to the knee.A week of ice and rest, along with some anti-inflamitory pain killers for good measure, and i'm right as rain, i.e. able to plod along . I've re-thought my training plan since , and will not be doing 2 long runs one straight after the other.

From my own experience it sounds like the onset of tendonitis. I overcome mine by using a bucket of ice or cold packs as often as possible. Gently stretching the main calf off the drop of a step and then turning foot to stretch the outside affected area.

I do not foam roll the sore area as this will irritate the tendon further. I do foam roll a small bit at the very top of the outside calf up to where it meets the side of the knee. I stay off it for 3-4 days or until it subsides. I then continue to pay attention to stretching this area before my runs for the next while.

If you really do feel like you have to exercise then a cross-trainer in a gym mightn't give you any trouble.

Thanks guys... Took your advice...found it difficult tho as no pain other than when prodding at the bruise (prob shudnt do that but needed reminder why I couldnt run!) Did a handy 8k tonight & all fine. Week & a half to meath spring half so can look fwd with less trepidation now :)
