How comes Setanta and Sky both have rights for ROI? Have i missed something, i thought it should be one or the other broadcaster? Will Sky's coverage be blacked out here?

I'd say they'll share coverage a bit like the Champions League scenario.

Setanta have the exclusive rights for F1 in ROI only, Sky Sports and BBC have the rights for the UK, so it's well within Setanta's rights to block Sky Sports coverage here in Ireland, it remains to be seen whether they will or not yet.

Sky have already said that F1 will be available in RoI.

Setanta continue to have rights as they are mid contract. Sky only have the rights this year as the BBC renegotiated their contract.

I'd expect Sky to have exclusive Irish rights when Setanta's contract comes to an end.

More than likely yes, Setanta's has rights for two more seasons I think. I can see Sky moving the F1 channel to the Sports packs next year too, they don't give anything 'free' for too long.

I think that Irish Sky Sports subscribers might kick up a stink if F1 is 08'd here, considering they already pay a hefty premium for the sports channels. It's not as if you're dealing with Entertainment pack channels.

    Yes.

Seems a bit unfair on setanta doesnt it? Im sure in saying this but didnt ESPN have to block uefa cup matches here because of rights with setanta/tv3 etc?

Yes they do block Europa League matches on ESPN which is a shame considering it's in HD on Sky and Setanta isn't.

Setanta must not have gotten exclusive Irish rights back in the day.

The BBC coverage wasn't blocked out so I see no reason why the Sky coverage would be.

So is Channel 4 but that's blocked in ROI from time to time.

The version of Channel 4 on the Irish EPG is actually encrypted. Remove your viewing card and see if you can view it.

You can't.Simply tune in one of the UK variations to view blocked content.

I know you can't. I was trying to show Schummi that the version on the Irish EPG is encrypted.

    Ok.:o

Sky have too much money tied up in F1 now for it to be encrypted here.Besides they have it as HD only and Setanta don't have a HD channel on satellite. That could be their way around any exclusivity problems.

Sky only have half the races live, although they will show other half deferred I think. BBC have the other half. Setanta showing every race live and taking BBC commentary as far as I know..

Sky will be showing all practice sessions, qualifying, races, GP2 and GP3 live.

The Sky F1 channel is available for no extra charge to any Sky customers that have HD or Sky Sports.

They will be showing all of the races. BBC only have half the races live with recorded coverage for the rest. I'm looking forward to seeing what Sky can do but I don't think the coverage will be as good as the BBC as Jake Humphrey is staying with the Beeb and he's been excellent the last couple of years. Sky have Brundle though so we'll see how it works out.
