Virtual Multitrack Recorder

Is there a good, free software (Windows 7) out there that allows one to record audio (through the PCs built-in mic, for example) and playback simultaneous tracks, like you can do with a real four-track recorder?

Currently I record ideas on my phones dictaphone, and then when I have time, I create a fuller demo on Ableton. I would like a middle ground between these two, though.

    Anything that fits the bill?

Sounds like a job for Audacity.

I tried the audacity one, and found the mic on my laptop to be rubbish. I will stick to my current methods.

    Thanks.
