Just wondering guys. I was hoping to apply to the garda dog unit after college ,because I've grown up with many dogs so as you can imagine I love dogs and understand dog behaviour fairly well, what would be my chances of actually being accepted if I were to apply? (I am aware that it is more than just liking dogs and it is policing)

Understand that I have very little knowledge of the gardai itself so any information that I should know or you feel is necessary would be appreciated :)

The Garda Dog Unit is a specialist unit, staffed by Gardai not civilians, therefore you can't apply externally. To join the unit you must complete basic garda training and complete your probationary period, after 3years (I think) you can then apply for specialist units. There is no guarantee you will get it as there is great demand to join them.

As above - applications for places in the Garda Dog Unit far exceed the number of available slots , the same seems to go for UK Police Forces.
I once met a dog-handler who had been in the dog unit for close on 20 years , I asked him he had stayed there so long , he replied '' because my dog won't stab me in the back '' :p
