Bus to and from Ikea.

I'm planing on going to Ikea tomorrow, it'll be my first time ever. I heard the 13A bus stops near Ikea, so I was wondering if I can take that bus straight from Tallaght (say, The Square) to there, or do I have to take the Luas to Jervis and then get on a 13A bus?

Also, what bus would I take to come home?

    Thanks in advance!

IKEA is only served by the 140. The 13 was rerouted last year and is now about a 10 minute walk away.

The 140 runs from Rathmines. If coming from Tallaght, take the 65 or 65B to Rathmines Road and switch to the 140 there. Alternatively you can take any bus from Tallaght to Central Bank, Dame Street and walk around to Suffolk Street to board the 140. The 140 stops at the pedestrian entrance to IKEA and the stop is just across the road for returning back.

It's the 13 that goes from Clondalkin to near Ikea, but if you don't know where you are going get the 140 from Rathmines/City Centre as it stops in the Ikea carpark so you can't get lost (well outside, inside Ikea is an other story!!!)

Oh wow, thanks for the information or else I would have gotten on the wrong bus o.O.

Well, I suck at knowing where to stop, so is there a luas stop that stops in Rathmines? That'd be ideal. :p

Ohh so there's a 140 in City Center.. great maybe I can just get the luas to Jervis then like I planned to before.

What about the bus home? Which one do I take :S? Can never get used to all these different bus numbers and where goes what...

The 140 runs from Rathmines to IKEA. It travels from Rathmines (Palmerston Park) - Rathmines Road - Stephen's Green - Suffolk Street - O'Connell Street - Phibsboro - Finglas Road - IKEA.

I'm assuming you're coming from The Square. From here you can take The Luas, or the 27, 49, 54A, 65 or 77A bus to the city centre (the 27 and 65 are the quickest). All these buses stop at the Super Valu store close to the Luas terminus. The Luas takes about 45-50 minutes to reach the city centre, the bus is similar but about 35 minutes off peak. There are three main stops for you to get the 140 in the city centre. Suffolk Street, this is a 2 minutes walk from the Central Bank on Dame street where all the above buses will leave you, Westmoreland Street or O'Connell Street. If you're taking the Luas, get off at Abbey Street and walk up O'Connell Street. The 140 stops just beyond The Spire on the GPO side of O'Connell Street. As mentioned above, the 140 brings you to the door of IKEA, it takes about 30/35 minutes.

Coming home, you can take the 140 from the stop opposite the one you got off. This will take you back into the city centre. It stops on O'Connell Street and D'Olier Street where you can then take the bus or Luas back to Tallaght.

If you're taking the Luas and Bus you should buy a daily Luas and Bus combi ticket, it costs €7.50 and can be purchased from the Luas vending machine. If you're just taking the bus, a one day rambler ticket will cost 6.20 and can be purchased from Super Valu where the bus stops or from Newspoint just inside the door of The Square on Level 3.

Here is the timetable for the 140.

I've only done it once, but I got off at the last stop which is in the grounds of Ikea (at the side of the building - the bus goes in and turns around and comes back to the stop), and got back on at the same stop on the way back into town.

That bus terminus is no longer there as the building has been extended. The last stop for the 140 is now at the gate of the pedestrian entrance on the main link road, and for returning to the city the first stop is a short distance from the exit across the road.

Easiest part of the day and expedition will be getting there and getting home. Getting around IKEA without going insane is the biggest challenge.:pac:

That terminus is now back up and running. Don't wait at the stop outside the store as it isnt used anymore

When I was in IKEA (just before Xmas) there were signs & arrows directing people to the 140 bus stop. When you clear the checkout area, you'll go down an escalator to street level. That's where you'll see the first sign. Follow them and you'll be grand. I presume those signs are still there even if the stop has moved. They just LOVE their signs and arrows in IKEA. lol

Could you imagine trying to navigate the inside of IKEA without any signs or arrows, lol!? :o
I don't have bad sense of direction but even IKEA easily gets the best of me.

Oh Jebus. That is the stuff of nightmares. It if wasn't for the arrows (God bless 'em each and every one) my shriveled, emaciated corpse would be found in a corner of the lighting department about 2 months after I walked in the front door.

OP, I wish you the best of luck in making your first trip to IKEA and being able to make it home with your purchases on the bus. Bring money with you for a taxi home (or at least to the LUAS stop) just in case. :D

Bring a big roll of string and breadcrumbs so you can find the way out again
