Can anyone tell me when the civilian licensing system started in Ireland? Any info appreciated, as well as links for references.

    Thanks

Interesting question, I had a quick look at some of my books on Irish aviation. The only clue I could come up with was that licence No 23 was only issued in 1932, number 63 was issued in 1936. So very low numbers. But remember many Irish pilots would have had British licences prior to that.

The first Irish registered aircraft; EI-AAA was only registered in 1928. This was also the year of the Havana Convention on civil aviation which Ireland signed up to. Circumstantial evidence only I'm afraid. But it would make sense that a licensing scheme would be put in place as a result of that.

Hugh Cahill only opened the Irish Aero Club in Kildonan in 1930. Their students would be the first Irish trained A licence holders. So it really must have been around that time.
