What will I do for the Summer?

    Howdy guys,

    My circumstances are hence:

I am currently doing a placement in college and will be finished in May - fully qualified. I have also secured a decent job on a grad program of a big company, which starts in September. So I have the summer off before I start my career ()

So what will I do for the summer? Travelling will be difficult as I have zero money and Im barely getting by on my placement wages so cant save anything between now and then.

Ideally I'd like to get some random job which pays well enough for me to have a life but is somewhat interesting and not soul destroying.

Any ideas?? Also if you have had any good Summers just out of college on zero money feel free to share you story as it might give me some inspiration

Chugging. it's one of the only jobs you'll get I'd say. they look like they enjoy pissing people off, and there's great money in it. they'd probably be ok with it being temporary too.

Watch an obsence amount of porn. Then go out to nightclubs full of girls with no morals and do a bit of "inter-raaaaailing" without having to leave the country.

    ColHol,
I suggest getting a summer job. Despite what people say there ARE jobs out there. Sadly, loads are only offering part time tho.

But seeing as how you are free all summer. I suggest applying for one of these jobs. Retail is the motherload right now for offering crappy hours.

Take some heroin and the summer will fly. Hand jobs for cash will cover most expenses. Good luck to ya.

I plan on studying the subtle differences between the male semen and tree sap. I need a personal assistant.

:o I didnt mean to gloat. Never went travelling, never went on a J1 or anything, all my college summers have been working meaningless jobs for a pittance, I just dont want this one to be the same!

Go abroad to work, somewhere hot preferably, for the summer.

That way you get a holiday and a great experience and you dont need much money, just enough for a one way flight.

Do security at festivals around the UK and Ireland for the summer, you get paid, don't need to be qualified and don't have to do much, but on your time off you get to have a laugh.

Learn to play a musical instrument but busk at the same time. Put up some kind of banner in front of where ever you choose to undertake this endeavour explaining how you are poor and crap but are learning.

Anyone that plays an instrument will have a kind of nostalgic appreciation for when they were crap and only learning and were real apprehensive about playing in front of people and will throw you some sympathy spondoolies. Hipsters and the like will think it's some kind of post modern statement on music and give you money ironically to participate in the performance art.

Then one day some part Spanish part Russian exchange student girl, an olive skinned dark eyed beauty with pale blonde hair named Anastasia will happen past and be awe struck by your originality. Your eyes will meet in the middle of your terrible rendition of 'Get Down With The Sickness' and you will engage in a passionate summer long romance. But one day you will wake up in a bath tub full of ice and she will be gone with one of your kidneys.

Or call centre work. They always need people.

Since the start of the recession the beautiful spanish girls have started taking both kidneys, times are tough so they have had to take both because there are fewer guys out there with the money to fall for their charm.

It's a shameful thing in a country when one kidney just isn't enough. :(

Them part spanish part russian girls are bastards for taking the ol' kidneys alright. It almost sounds worth it though

do some charity work in a foreign country..they usually pay your flights and accomodation..there you'll get a bit of pocket money enough to have a laugh with people you meet there and do a little travelling! Great experience ;)

I don't think any charity would pay your flights and accommodation if you're only going for a few months, usually you'd need to commit to at least a year or two and have a particular skill that they need.

    first world problems, eh??

volunteer somewhere, you'll feel great about "giving something back"...and if you want to gloat you can start a thread about that too:D

You will be entering a well paid position, so you will have money but not a big chunk of time off.

So on the strength of your up coming job Borrow wherever you can and do an interail thing and use the hostels they are cheap and good craic.

Id like to volunteer but I'd have no way of supporting myself. (first world problems indeed)

interrail ticket by yourself, see amazing places, meet great people.

Tour every county in Ireland and have the craic and then at the end of it write a story of all your experiences. You will have no money and have to rely on the kindness in strangers but it's cool because here if you call to some stranger's house they have to give you tea and biscuits and you will have to listen to all their stories, place by place and at the end of it all, you will be culturally diversified and can write all about it

Like Minidazzler suggests do some volunteering at the festivals, I volunteered at the Life, Bump and Electric Picnic last year and it was a great experience, made loads of new friends and learnt a bit about festival management. Because Ive done these fests now, Im in with a chance to do advanced volunteering this year in which I come down a few days before they kick off and work. Come the festival I am free with a festival ticket. Canna wait now till the end of May, bring it on.

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)
