    help please insurance ?
Hello folks a quick question regarding insurance payouts.

I reversed into my sister inlaws car and can`t afford to pay for repairs as out of work. So I proceeded to inquire about claiming. I had to get a quote from a registered mechanic, but having seen there quote of 1400 euro to mend three panels, one on my own car two on the other car.

I am worried that there high cost will leave me paying for it for a few years through higher insurance. My own mechanic who is not registered but works in the evenings at home who says he can mend the 2 cars for half that.
I have no choice but go through an insurance claim, but don`t want to claim that amount.

My question is who is the check made out to on a claim like this, is it the registered mechanic or to the Policy holder, ie myself. Only asking as i`d rather get it done cheaper and possibly return left over cash to insurers, hoping to keep insurance down for next year. This is my first accident in 11 yrs driving. Never had this stress before.

Thanks for looking any help is much appreciated .

Never got anything repaired on car insurance so can't help you there but I know for windscreen breakage or chips it goes direct to the repair place. Even if the payment does go straight to you and it costs less than the estimate you can't simply return what left over to the insurance company as it means the work carried out was not to the estimate that you gave the insurance company and you actually got more from them than you should off.

You can't claim on your insurance for her car only your own. She has to claim on her insurance for hers and I think your insurance pays hers if its not her fault. I think its safe to say you will get a price hike anyway. Your insurance won't go up by that much maybe 100 or so if even that. Most policys now have an excess so if its 250 lets say and the cost to repair is 1,000 only 750 will go to repair place and you are responsible for the excess of 250.

You don't have to use a registered mechanic. You can use who ever you want once it fix's the problem but the insurance company will want an estimate from whoever is doing the work then a receipt when the work has been carried out to ensure you actually got the work done.

First of all you didn't write really which car needs to be repaired?
Is it yours, your sister's in-law or both?

You pretty much have few options.

    1. Pay for all damage from your own pocket, and don't involve insurer(s).

    2. Let you sister in-law claim from your insurance for her car, and you also claim from your insurance for your car. While her car will be repaiered completely at their cost, you will have to pay excess towerds your car repair, which might be few hundred euros depending on your policy.

    3. After doing point 2, you can then refund insurer for all spendings to prevent your premium rising, but it doesn't really make sense, as if you wanted to do it from your pocket, then you should do what's described in point 1.

There is most likely no point in using cheaper garage if you are going to claim, or refunding insurer only half, as it will most likely not prevent your premium from rising.

Your sister in law will have to claim off your insurance, her insurance company will probably send her to a garage to have the damage assessed and a price will be given for the repairs. Once youre making a claim for that kind of money it doesnt really matter whether you go to the cheaper or more expensive mechanic; a claim is a claim and it will affect your NCB and premium regardless.
