    Hi all!

Looking for films in the above genre(s), that sort of encapsulate them all.
Something like Chinatown, LA Confidential, Hollywoodland etc.

    Any ideas?

If you want modern, then Brick is awesome. If you want older, check out Rififi, amazing crime film. On the more noir side, The Killers, Sunset Blvd. and Fallen Angel are easy favourites.

    Maltese Falcon
    This Gun for Hire
Who framed Roger Rabbit (seriously :D)
    Double Indemnity

I'll recommend M. It's one of the originals of the Noir genre. While not a real Detective film, there are elements to it.

    Definitely one to see.

mullholland drive is a good one. not exactly a mystery, not exactly noir. a bit of both. and very weird!

    The Late Show (1977)
    Farewell My Lovely (1975)
Blade Runner (yes it is!) (1982)
    The Long Goodbye (1973)
    The Last Seduction (1994)
    Kill Me Again (1989)

A Touch Of Evil with Orson Welles directing and starring is a must see!

Or Mullholland Falls, similarly bad neo-noirs.

Zodiac is easily one of my favourite crime/detective films of the last few years. Not exactly a noir though. More of a procedural.

Zero Effect is a quirky modern detective story, with Bill Pullman and Ben Stiller. Under-rated classic.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang as mentioned above is great.

The Big Lebowski or a lot of the Coen Brothers' other films are noir or neo-noir. Like The Man Who Wasn't There.

Would The Killer Inside Me qualify?

actually Gone Baby Gone with Casy Affleck as well would be a Neo-Noir film

    I absolutely adore film noir.

These are some of my favourites and I'd highly recommend them:

    The Maltese Falcon
    Double Indemnity
    Detour

On a more comedic level I'd recommend 'Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid' with Steve Martin. :)

Sadly, you'll never encounter a film like that again.

A one of a kind; a one of the '70s; a one that gets better
    with every viewing.

    I think you've seen THE best. :)

watched Brick again. It is a bit OTT in some places, that kind of high school life doesnt exist in reality, it put me off untill I accepted it in the 2nd half.

its stylish, well shot, some nice dialogue, good acting, plot develops well(tho hard to keep track of the character names near the end and who did what, was with who etc)

    worth a watch

returned to Zodiac, watched the last quarter. its not a spoiler to say the killer wasnt found, but thats not completely true. just like watching the Titanic you know the ending already, Zodiac is alot different tho. one thing that wasnt believable was the relationship between the comic writer and his wife.
