Hi, I have a peugeot 1.4 diesel (2003 model) I was driving today and the ABS light came on, and an "ABS fault" message came up on the dash. But everything appears to be fine, I know I can put it on the diagnosics machine, but has anyone on here had the same happen to them, or know what the problem might be?
    Thanks.

If you turn it off and start the car up and don't take off does the ABS light come on and extinguish as normal? And than come on once you roll off? Or is it on continuously from start up and never extinguishes even when you haven't moved....

The fault does clear, but comes on again after a few miles

ABS sensor so me thinks, does it come on as you are turning by any chance?

If a diagnostic check tells you its a rear abs speed sensor thats faulty it maybe just rust that has widened the air gap between the sensor and ring.
removing/refitting an abs sensor without damaging it is next to impossible..:(

thanks for your reply, if this is the problem, what sort of costs are involved.
drove about 10-15miles today and it never came on.

If its a faulty sensor then its the price of a new sensor + fitting.
    e.g. http://www.ebay.ie/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570&_nkw=307+1.4+hdi+abs+sensor
Depending on the garage for fitting costs but i would think €50 would go along way...:)

Did you actually try to use ABS when the light was on?

If you didn't how can you know that everything appears to be fine?

Thanks, that doesn't sound too bad.

If you've access to a multimeter, you can check the output from each of the sensors yourself. Set it to the 0-20 V AC range. Jack up one corner at a time and disconnect the connector of the ABS sensor, (may be tucked away behind some plastic wheel liner). Connect the probes and have somebody spin the wheel up. Depending on how good the meter is, it should register a reading on the screen. If you find a sensor that doesn't, check the wiring for breaks, the sensor head itself for dirt/cracks and the reluctor ring (pick up for the sensor) for any cracks, rust/muck.
