I'm currently in my final year of Civil Eng. (Ord) degree and I have the choice of going on to do either a structural engineer or a civil eng. honours degree, what would you recommend to do. I'm gravitating towards structural as I enjoy the design side of engineering and I have previously worked as a cad tech. and like working in an office environment.
I don't really want to emigrate as I have a young family but I'm wondering if I am limiting my chances of getting a job by choosing structural over civil. Anyone got advice for me, thanks in advance.

Benny I think you have to face the reality that no matter which option you choose it is going to be very difficult if not impossible to find work in Ireland. Civil will give you the most options as you can still go for structural jobs with that qualification but perhaps if jobs are scarce employers will prefer those who have specialised to some extent? It's hard to know. Best of luck.

Don't limit your options at this stage
    Go for the Civil option
    Best of luck

Thanks for the reply, I'm starting to think maybe doing a differant level 8 coarse, does anyone know if I can go on to any level 8 that has decent job prospects.

The environmental side is a logical progression from civil I suppose. Chemical eng has great prospects especially going forward aswell. Not that there flooded with jobs but I see more prospects for those sectors.

Unless your into IT or pharmaceutical which are the 2 busy areas now, but I honestly think in 2-3 years every graduate will be I.T. or pharma so it will be a busy little sector.

On a side note from my few humble years experience, never downplay your civil qualifications when you move on. They stand to you in every sector you go into. I'm in the M&E sector now and its a great backbone qualification to have. IMO.

Or open a pound shop or bookies! You'll be minted!
