I've checked and I can't see if this has been posted before. Apologies if it has.

I am selling a piece of electronic equipment online through an Irish website and received a request by email from <SNIP> to confirm the selling price.
    I responded with the price.

I received another email from same person saying that they would proceed and they requested that I send a Paypal payment request to them using their email address as the request reference. I thought this was strange but I did it amyway.

I received an email purporting to be from Paypal saying that Paypal had received payment subject to receipt of shipping details which I could conveniently log into via the link in the email.

I realised what was going on and emailed the person back to say that I hadn't received any payment.

I received another email from "Paypal" saying that the payment may show up in my account as pending but that I should proceed to ship the item and then I should log on in the link provided to confirm my shipping receipt/details following which the funds would be released.

Just for the hell of it I emailed the <SNIP> to give him a tracking number and to ask him where in Ireland he was.

He said he was in the US.

The shipping address was to Nigeria.
