Hey guys, I just got done watching the motorcycle diaries, and I absolutely loved it. Being a student of Spanish, and a student of life, I was wondering does anyone have any recommendations for any good spanish movies with or without subtitles?? Let me know please....thanks

    The Night of the Sunflowers

A great thriller/drama, a little similar to Amores Perros in the way it presents a variety of viewpoints on the same events, but it also has its own pretty unique way of playing around with time which gives it a great rhythm.

The Orphanage and The Devil's Backbone, two great horror films that are also great dramas in their own right too.

And Pan's Labyrinth too, of course, a great fantasy drama and an insight into the Spanish Civil War and the period after it.

    Pan's Labryrinth was brilliant!

The Night Of The Sunflowers. A tense and affecting thriller, I'm surprised this one has such a low profile really.

Cria Cuervos was re-released recently and it's a really impressive film. Just something strangely hypnotic about it:

The main child actress in it - Ana Torrent - also starred in the much acclaimed Spirit of the Beehive, which is certainly worth a gander.

La habitación del niño - a pretty good horror/thriller from Alex De La Iglesia. Upon moving to a new house, the couple are disturbed to find that they can hear voices through their baby monitor, and things get stranger from there.

Los Cronocrimenes - a great little time-travel thriller from Nacho Vigalondo, in which the protagonist discovers that the implications of getting caught up in time-travel are much more complex and convoluted than he would have expected...

Sin noticias de Dios - a peculiar sort of drama in which an angel and a demon are sent to earth to try and determine the fate of a boxer's soul, as the outcome may determine the victor in the ages-old conflict between Heaven & Hell.

Tésis - a student working on her thesis about violence stumbles onto a snuff film and, in attempting to find out more about it, discovers that the girl whose death it featured was a former student at her college.

Abre Los Ojos - excellent sci-fi film about love, loss and regret. The protagonist meets the love of his life, but is subsequently injured and has to have his face surgically reconstructed - an event which drives his new love away, and after which his life begins to change in disturbing and surreal ways.

El Día De La Bestia - a cabalistic priest discovers that the antichrist will be born on Christmas day, and is sent on a secret mission to infiltrate the satanist group responsible in order to save humanity. Pitch-black humour and horror in equal measure.

Rudo Y Cursi - the story of two talented soccer-playing brothers from a rural village in Mexico who are both picked up to play for high-profile teams, and the ways in which this intensifies their rivalry.

Celda 211 - tense prison thriller in which a prison guard on his first day gets caught up in a prison riot, and pretends to be a new prisoner in order to try and survive. The riot's instigator, Malamadre, does not trust the newcomer and keeps him close to hand as the riot's events begin to spiral out of control.

Forgot about Spirit of the Beehive, great movie.

Intacto is a another great Spanish thriller which takes the premise of intrinsic luck to the extreme with underground high stakes games of chance. Max Von Sydow's presense sweetens the deal.

I found Fermat's Room enjoyable too. A mathematically themed mystery/thriller. Think of it as a more cerebral but diet version of Cube.

    The Sea Inside

The first time I saw Javier Bardem on the big screen. I won't say too much in case I give too much away (even though I think most of the story is given up front)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0369702/

    Awesome film.

    Como agua para chocolate -

It's an older film 1992 but it broke records and won several awards, and it is considered one must-see of mexican cinema.

    Neuve Reinas (9 Queens)

Buenos Aires, conmen and Ricardo Darin in inspired form.

I also quite like Un Cuento Chino - also set in BA. Darin again, it's a comedy but still worth a watch. One to try without the subtitles if your spanish is up to it. I saw it in a cinema over there and was able to follow it ok.

Seeing a lot of central/south american movies mentioned in this thread :pac:

Can't go wrong with Almodovar OP!

Spanish language movies include much more than just Almodovar and aren't all based in a trendy barrio of Madrid. You could get that far without much help....nothing wrong with a few pointers outside of Spain, especially as the OP has an interest in the language.

I'd say anything from Almodovar or Amenabar.
I would also suggest Julio Medem's Los Amantes del Circulo Polar.

There are some amazing Spanish movies out there. For horrors, REC and The Orphanage are good bets.

As someone said already, you can't go wrong with Pedro Amoldóvar. He's one of the best filmmakers around, for me. The Skin I Live In (La piel que habito), Bad Education (La mala educación) and Volver are my favourites.

Y tu mamá también is a great coming of age type of drama and quite sad too. A nice glimpse of Mexican culture.

Obviously Pan's Labyrinth is excellent too.

Chillax brah, I misunderstood, thought they were looking for spanish movies as in movies set/made in spain not because they wanted to improve their mastery of the language.

Abre Los Ojos is another decent one OP, it was remade as Vanilla Sky in the states., ad sure no harm checking out Woody Allen's Vicky Christina Barcelona either.

Y Tu Mama Tambien and Amorres Perros are awesome films too as has already been mentioned.

+1 on Abre Los Ojos, but I can't believe you lasted more than about 10 minutes into Vicky Christina Barcelona - thought it was turgid and tedious. If you want a film set in Barcelona, Biutiful is a better bet (though it's still at least half an hour too long, IMO).

Los Lunes al Sol - Mondays in the Sun. Also available on netflix if you have it.

Ah I liked it, it gets considerably better when Penelope Cruz shows up. Its by no means a great film but I think its one of Allen's best out of the last ten years. Not a patch on Midnight in Paris though.

Oh yea, few more just came into my head, Maria Full of Grace, Sex & Lucia and Sin Nombre are worth a look! Pretty sure they're in spanish, mostly anyway.

I would recommend a Spanish film called Take My Eyes (Te Doy Mis Ojos, directed by It's about an abusive relationship between a married couple and the steps that the woman in question takes to deal with it. It's a brilliant film with really good performances from the male and female leads and while dealing with a dark subject matter, it's never grim for the sake of it.

When it was released in 2003 it was widely praised for raising the subject of domestic abuse which is a major issue in Spain, with a huge amount of it going unreported.

The film also won a host of prizes at the Goya Awards, Spain's equivalent of the Oscars. Definitely worth a look.

+1 Sin Nombre and Maria full of grace are excellent. Y tu mama tambien and miss balla (mexican) also very good.

    El secreto de sus ojos
Oscar Nominee a few years back

Sin Nombre the best of the lot though.
