Hi guys , i just have a question about rent allowance and job seekers allowance . my situation is im living in a friends house at the moment buts its purely temporary , i applied for the jobseekers allowance using this address and it is now being proccessed by the social welfare , i was advised to contact my local communty officer about supplement , i have and he has told me that i need a letter from my landlord that i have permission to live there , the problem is the landlord would never give permission , so i went to look for a flat for myself i have found one at 400 euro a month and the landlord accepts rent allowance , do i go back to the cw officer and ask for rent supplement . im just need somebody to explain how to approach the social welfare office with this problem ? . I also have no where else to go ..

It will depend on where you live, e.g. most of Dublin & Kildare are covered by Central Rent Units & not the local CWO (now HEO).

Also, if the apartment is self contained (not shared) €400 is within the limits for Dublin & Kildare.

It would be best to check with reception at your local Health Centre as the staff there will usually have rent packs available which contain all the info you need!

In terms of qualifying, you will need to demonstrate that you have been renting for a minimum of 6 months in the last 12 & that you could afford the rent when you took it on.

Alternatively, you will need to be assessed by the Local Authority (for the area you wish to live in) as having a housing need.

If you are in any doubt, phone a local CWO/HEO for further info. Clinics tend to be exceptionally busy so phoning often saves you & him/her time!

    Best of luck!:)

ok i know exactly how it works as ive done it before,

in order to get rent allowence you have to first go to your local council office and get your name down on the housing list, you have to get that form stamped in a tax office, then you get a letter off the council stating that you have a housing need,

you then go to your cwo, tell them that you want rent allowence forms that you are applying for rent allowence, he will tell you the limtits of rent, its different in every area for example rent cant be over 600 a month for single parents, it will be different for you,

once you have the rent allowance forms you go look for an apartment and get the landlord to sign them

bring them back to your cwo, landlords require a deposit , dont pay them with your own money when they fill out the form make sure they mark deposit not paid and tell them you will have it asap, because you are entitled to get a deposit off the cwo for your first time going on rent allowance,

final thing go back to the cwo with your forms and they will sort out your deposit and rent allowance

if you act swiftly you can get this done in a day or two :)

    good luck

I'm afraid some of what you have stated above is not accurate!:o

A deposit is NOT an entitlement. Any one applying for a rent supplement (RS) can also apply for an Exceptional Need Payment (ENP) IF they do not have the resources to fund a deposit themselves. The claimant must provide evidence that this is the case if requested by the HEO.

The HEO in the relevant Community Welfare Service (CWS) will assess their application & either award or disallow the claim for an ENP.

RS applications for most of Dublin & Kildare have been centralised so the local HEO (CWS) may not be the person assessing the RS claim.

OP if you are elsewhere in the country, check with your local Health Centre to see where an application should be submitted.

A RS is highly unlikely to ever be awarded in 'a day or two' as there are certain checks & procedures that must be gone through.

In addition, quite a lot of documentation & information is required.

90% of all applications are incomplete upon first submission.
