WITH A population of more than 78,000, the Drogheda area far exceeds the size of Waterford and should be made a city, a planning expert has claimed.

Dr. Brian Hughes, a renowned lecturer and chartered surveyor, who has been drafted in by the committee to advise them on the campaign, said he believes Drogheda is well placed to become Ireland's next city as it currently has a larger population than the country's fifth city, Waterford, which has a population of just 51,000.

'I wanted to produce an evidencebased study with figures which have emerged from the census figures for 2011,' said Dr Hughes. 'We already have the preliminary figures but we're awaiting the official figures which will be published at the end of April.'
