    Hi guys,

Just new to rooting Android and wondering has anyone got any good suggestions for stable custom ROM's / Kernels for nexus s? Just rooted so looking to try out some stable releases. Also is it just a question of downloading the ROM and using Clockwork to flash the ROM on to the nexus? All i've done so far is a backup of my current ROM which presumably i can go back to. If i change the kernel is there anyway to backup and restore this after? When i put anew ROM on the nexus does that delete everything or how does it work? Soz for a ll the questions but there's just so much information out there its a tad confusing

    Thanks all

I don't have a nexus s but I have been updating Roms on my Desire S for a long time now.

Check out the XDA forum for the nexus S to see what ROMS are available.

If you backed up your Rom using Rom Manager then is a good start, you will need this at some stage, something always goes wrong at some stage and having an up to date backup is a life saver. Also, install Titanium Backup and that will backup your Apps and Data.

When you flash a new ROM you will need to wipe the Data, System and Cache sections of your phone. This will wipe everything so having Titanium will allow you to reinstall all your old apps and settings.

A full wipe of Data, System and Cache is always recommended when moving to a new ROM, if you are updating the existing rom you are on then wiping the Cache should be enough.

Flashing a Kernal shouldn't delete data. You can't backup the kernal you have now all you can do is try to find a copy of it online to flash later.

To install the Rom, download the .zip file of it from XDA, open Rom Manager and select install from .zip. This will prompt you to select the zip you want to install, ask if you want to backup your current Rom and what folders you want to wipe. Hit OK and away you go.

Its always nerve wracking when flashing a new ROM for the first time but my advice is if you have a Backup of your ROM and a titanium backup you should be OK. The other thing I didn't know before flashing is the first Boot of a new ROM could take about 5 mins. Your phone will sit at the boot screen for ages. Just wait, don't panic. If after 10 mins your still there, you have a problem. Turn off the phone while holding volume down and power and boot into Recovery, from here restore your old rom, or try flashing the new one again.

    Best of Luck.

PS. I find that if I have a ROM on the phone for a few weeks/months, no matter how much I love it, I always flash something else, just for a change. It can become addictive almost.

EDIT: Wow, just noticed after I posted how long the post is. hope it helps.
