The potential effect of no CL football on clubs

The premiership current sees a lot of clubs who traditionally would have been used to having a champions league placing being now in real danger of not being in the competition atleast for 1 year. Clubs like Chelsea, Arsenal & Liverpool (1 more year in their case) have a need both financially and in terms of attracting players capable of getting them back to the CL places.

What do you think could be the potential scenaios at these clubs if they arent the seemingly lucky 1 who gets their desired prize? Will they keep spending like CL clubs or will the new financial rules affect them? Will players like RVP move on making it even less likely that they can get back into the competition the following season. Would a manager like AVB or Arsene Wenger be given another year to try and rectify things (more likely in Wengers case imo) or be replaced in the hope change could bring back success? Could Liverpool continue to compete to attract stars etc and would their chances at getting back into the CL in the future deminish with harder opponents in the quest for 4th while Spurs/City improve?

also interesting (could be spilt into another thread I guess) is who do you think will get 4th, 5th and 6th? I honestly dont expect Livepool to come 4th despite both Arsenal and Chelsea almost falling apart at times this year but if they did it would see both Chelsea and Arsenal potentially out of the CL spots for next year. The traditional big 4 is long dead it would seem, will be interesting to see what way things will go with some of those clubs as a result

Really? Did you really expect City with their millions to not have a say in the top 4?

I didnt say I did. Infact I just stated that they have and now the fallout is truely beginning for a lot of clubs and its been confounded by Spurs taking another CL spot while new financial rules are also being brought into effect imo.

It's had a very positive effect on Juventus this season.

There is a who will come 4th thread floating about.

As for the absence of a CL place I guess it depends on whether it becomes a habit or not. Some clubs have a better balance sheet and can cope with a year or two out , LFC despite two and a half seasons without CL revenue (and one without any Euro league cash) have a turnover that is not down by too much.

    2008/09 £184.8m
    2009/10 £184.5m
    2010/11 £170.0m

Others could be caught short very quickly.

If AVB doesnt get us 4th he faces the very real prospect of getting axed by Roman.

But in the bigger picture, Chelsea would fail to attract bigger name players or promising young talents.

TBH this year, apart from the current top 3, no team has gone on a really sustained run of results.

If anyone between Arsenal/Chelsea/Liverpool can string together 5 or more victories on the spin they could walk away with 4th, as the teams around them are very inconsistent at the moment.

4th is not a guarnteed for Chelsea, nor is it a right but someone like Roman will see it as an absolute minimum for Chelsea.

Realistcally its between Liverpool/Arsenal/Chelsea as I cant see Spurs dropping points an dropping out of the top 4, I'd love it, but I can see it happening.

Chelsea have roman to bail them out yet again as would city if they somehow failed, they can compensate for players wanting chumps league footy by giving huge wages. The pool and arsenal don't have that luxury, it'll hurt them more.

If a club is well run,it will be fine.

If it does a Leeds and budgets for future CL participation then it is in trouble.

I don't think it will affect Chelsea too much especially if it just for the season...they have big money behind them and this will always attract players to them.

I think for Arsenal it could possibly be the most serious as it would most likely see them lose RVP and without him they look a team that is a long way off CL qualification.

For Liverpool it is another season without it. They should have some European football next season, Spurs are currently reaping the benefits of Comolli's work so hopefully over the next few seasons it is the same for Liverpool.

I think the CL plays too much of a factor in deciding where a player goes, they often say 'I want to play in the Champions League' which I assume means they hope to win it, none of the English teams are close to the quality required to win it, and City will probably get there quickest. I think that players signing for these teams see them as nothing more than a platform for them to perform on in the hope that one of the true contenders will show an interest in them. Do these clubs want players like that?

This. Tis why I see Chelsea being in more danger than either Arsenal or Liverpool. Will be interesting to see what happens, Chelsea need it more.

Non-participation in the Champions League would indeed call into question the entire validity meaning of the club's existence.

No champions league football for Arsenal next season would be a disaster.

It's probably the one club that can go without CL football. The debts they have are far lower than all the top 10 clubs and the wage bill is very small for PL standards.

Maybe Arsenal will be ok from a financial point of view but Wenger has always guaranteed Champions league football. I think it has saved him over the last few seasons while he tries to develop his young players.

Auld age. And no live football to entertain me.

Wenger has said in the past that Arsenal's budget is not dependent on Champions League football. How true that it I guess we may well find out soon enough. The biggest impact for them would be possibly losing RVP.

Chelsea would get bankrolled through but the problem there is FFP. I've said on here before that I don't believe that it will be enforced by UEFA but if it does then that's a problem for a Club who make massive losses anyway.

Arsenal will lose Van Persie regardless.

Big players want to challenge for trophies like the Champions League in the hope of winning it. Settling for 4th every year and having no hope of winning anything will not attract players.

Anyway how many big players have left Arsenal in the last 6 years when they were in the Champions League. Loads.
