Honda Civic or Hyundai i30

    Hey All,
Looking for advice, I'm buying a new car and looking for opinions.
    I considering either a '11 Civic 1.4 petrol or '11 i30 1.6 diesel.

    After trade-in I can get a Civic for 14k or i30 for 12,500.
Now the Civic is ex-demo, and only 5k miles where as the i30 is 15k miles.
I do about 15-16k miles mostly motorway a year. I'm currently thinking the civic but the i30 is cheaper, also cheaper tax and better mpg, and has the 4 years left on warrenty.
Am I mad not to get the i30? I reckon civic will hold it's value a lot better ?
    Thanks!

try to factor in the savings made on running the hyundai over the time period of having the car, verses the possible higher resale value of the civic.

the hyundai would make more economical sense in the long run.

The longer you intend to keep the car, the more sense the Hyundai makes, especially as it's a diesel.

Personally, I'd buy the Civic, though.

    The more financial sense, maybe.

Purely commenting from Carzone prices/manufacturer fact sheets, I think the better resale of the Honda beats the fuel savings of the i30. Honda make a serious petrol engine. Never had an ounce of trouble with my EP1 Civic (D14Z6 SOHC). I can't imagine a 1.6l common rail diesel would offer the same luxury.

Definitely drive both and take my opinion with a rather large fistful of salt, I've never lived with the Hyundai so I can't offer any real-world input.

You really need to compare the price of an i30 petrol against the price of a petrol Civic or the diesel version of both. I would imagine a petrol i30 will cost alot less to buy than a petrol Civic. With the current trend of everyone buying diesel cars I don't buy into the petrol Civic will hold it's value more than the i30 diesel. I would not use it as an argument to buy one over the other anyway.

Also both cars have now been replaced with newer models so I would be patient as resale values of both old models drop further.

You are doing diesel mileage, in the best possible conditions for a modern diesel too. The diesel will do noticeably better mpg and is cheaper to buy. The i30 is also a quieter car to travel in compared to the civic which would make it better for motorway work. Also, the diesels torque will be more usable then too. Add the fact it's cheaper and has a longer warranty and the i30 seems the better option.

The civic won't be worth €1500 more than the i30 in a few years time so the residual value argument is void IMO.

i do constant M50 miles on my civic 1.4 petrol and get 4.9 L/100KM/S

my civic is 2007 but still good and great to drive and i dont think i'll ever get rid of her !

Leaving re-sale/economy aside - which do you prefer - to look at, to drive, comfort-wise? That has to be a consideration...

I would think the Hyundai is a better car. I've driven it's sister Kia equivilent and that's one sweet diesel engine. I haven't much experience of that model Civic but the ride is supposed to be a big flaw - v harsh. Even Honda admitted it at launch of new model. In fairness, on motorways that's not a big issue but we haven't great roads once you stray off them!

Hyundai/Kia are becoming mainstream players - I wouldn't worry about depreciation. Quite the opposite in fact - with the huge stream of new products (and long warranties) in recent years the brand image (and re-sale) can only improve in the coming years.

And remember - both models have recently been replaced so factor that into negotiations.

I drove an i30 110BHP 1.6L diesel today, very nice to drive. I am also considering the 2.2L DTEC New Civic, but it is about €2k more expensive. Anyone driven either, or any advice? :pac:

Plumped for the Civic in the end, should have it next week. 2.2L turbo diesel 150 BHP... wheeeeee!

Its mad to see the progress Hyundai have made in the last 10years. Back then you would be locked up and sent to the nuthouse for even considering a Hyundai over a Honda :P

Anyways, well done, the civic and that engine are a great choice!

Cheers - I am popping several automotive cherries with this one.

First diesel car I've owned, first turbocharged engine, first over 1.6L, & first Honda, ...
