Hi guys, just wondering does anyone in here know if there are any good running trails in or around Kilkenny area?. Would really love to give this a go and mix it up a bit to keep things interesting. Cheers in advance.

If you have access to a car, there are a few ideas here:

I have run up Brandon hill along the suggested route, i think the link is broken on the website but its well signposted on the ground as long as you know where to park the car, its a tough enough run and feels hardcore once you eventually get out on the open hillside.

There are a few inclines in jenkinstown that will help in adding hill repeats to your training - it depends on your definition of trail running as to whether it counts.

Also try Coill an Fhaltaigh, which isn't too far from the city either, flat and wide forest paths - very busy with walkers.

From town, if you keep going on the riverside walks on either side of the river it becomes trail-like, and is good as long as you don't mind climbing stiles

Cheers for that. The Brandon one looks like what i had in mind-open countryside, tracks, streams etc etc. What kind of distance are we looking at?

    John

Theres the nore valley walk 11k from Kilkenny to Bennettsbridge which looks great.

Also I think theres one from thomastown to Inistoige also.

Often thought of doing myself when the weather gets better / ground gets harder

    Cheers for that.(Merv,im asuming?)
Looks good on the map and could go by road from BB via Anamult back to Stoney and make a decent run of it!!

Its been a goo while since i did it but I parked the car on the side of the road somewhere on the way up - not in town as suggested - and it came in at somewhere around 15km.

The nore valley walk is a good route, through forested areas, meadows and a very short stretch on the road. All on the flat, naturally enough but bumpy under foot in parts, you would want to watch the ankles.

Like i said, as long as you don't mind being interupted by stiles, which can be as frequent as every few hundred metres for parts of the way, its a good run

highly rec the Kilkenny to Bennettsbridge trail, you will need trail boots this time of the year though - do it out and back in again...twice...
