Just got new Edge 500 and setup is asking what position format i want, Irish (ITM) or Irish (IG)? Haven't a clue what this option is. Live in Dublin so anyone know what do I select. As for Garmin Connect forget it, think I'll use Strava like most here, driving me mad trying to set that up too.

    Many Thanks in advance.

    Shouldn't matter,

IG is for the old irish grid reference, and ITM is for the newer transverse some thing or other, different numbers to reference the same place, makes no difference really although you can have decimals in the ITM, not sure about IG, so it may (or may not be better).

IMO, no difference in which you pick, so pick the ITM as it sounds fancier.

Thanks CramCycle, now to figure out all the setting and see how unfit I really am going up Howth.

These are grid reference systems rather than formats, or more simply how you convert the spherical coordinates (lat, long, height) into flat cartesian coordinates (x,y,z) so you can see them on the screen. You should always use ITM where it's an option as it has been designed specifically to work with GPS, overcoming problems with the older IG in this regard. From a practical point of view, your position is more accurate when plotted over background maps, particularly on the east and west coasts. For details, if you like tech stuff, see the this

Only use IG if you need to over-plot onto a legacy IG map.
